    11 meter Dipole Question

First off - I'd start by making each side about 10% longer or 9.5 feet long. This will allow you to tune the antenna by shorting first in 1 inch increments, then smaller. Realize that a 1/2 wave dipole has a natural impedance of about 73 ohms. So the lowest VSWR that you should expect is...

    Transverters!

Usually, (not always), transverters work by up converting the 10 meters band to the desired VHF/UHF band. Thus, if you have all modes and repeater splits available on 10 meters, then you will have them available on the transverted radio. Since the majority of 6M, 2M, 222/UHF rigs operate FM...

I got my license, now what?

I'd add the Icom IC-718 to the list too.

    RadioHACKtive butcher job.

Looks like a trimmer pot is missing too (next to the slugless coil). From your picture it looks like the insulation material behind two transitors in the chassis are shorted to the case, (it could just be the color, a reflection in the photo, too). Or maybe it's insulated grease on there?

    Twin X-Mount Dipole Idea

LY, Cable TV uses RG-6/U or RG-7, aluminum shielded cable with solid copper center conductor. These require the F-Series of crimp-on connectors. What you need for Two-Way operation is RG-59/U (same diameter as RG-8X), or RG-11/U (same diameter as RG/213/U) cable. Both of these have copper...

    SWR?

What kind of SWR meter are you using? One with Forward/Reverse setting with forward calibration, or a cross meter using two meters across from each other: where one shows forward power and the other shows reflected power, and the SWR is shown where the needles cross? Oh, yes the external meter...

New IC 7000. How to tune with the MFJ 941E?

Palex9, If you where to use an autotuner like the LDG IT-100 that connects to the 4-pin accessory plug in the back, then you just press the TUNE button located at the left side of the display. Most of the newer Icom radios (IC-706, 703, 718, 7000, 7200, 7600, 756 series) use the same 4-pin...

Winding toroids for end fed antenna

Camerart, Just use the metric formulas: 1/4 wave = 71/F(MHz), 1/2 wave = 143/F(MHz), or 1 wave = 285/F(MHz). You may be using this, but if not: Use ferrite core material for your core(s). A permiability of 125 to 250 should work the best for your application. 73, Mike

New IC 7000. How to tune with the MFJ 941E?

I have an Icom 7000 and (like you found out) use the RTTY mode to tune a screwdriver antenna when mobile. Works great! As far as auto tuners go, I use the LDG AT7000 (replaced by the LDG IT7000) which works all bands 160 thru 6 meters. The IC7000 is a great radio after you master the menus...

Properly comparing and evaluating antenna question.

Hi Pete, Like DOC said, all you can measure with the antenna analyzer is VSWR and cable characteristics (ie. cable loss and TDR functions). The VSWR will show you the resistive (Rs) and the reactive (Xs) of your antenna system. What you ideally like to see is Rs = 50, and Xs = 0 at resonance...

    Dipole questions

Hey Doc, Somethings not right! Looking at the two radiation plots the horizontal looks to be a dipole, whereas the vertical appears to be a ground mounted 1/4 wave vertical. This would account for the stronger gain for the dipole vs the half of a dipole (1/4 wave ground plane) for the...

I have never seen as SWR curve anything like this...

Yeah, I use the AIM-UHF. IMHO, the 4170 or UHF are the best analyzers out there.

    I Like skip ,But!

It's the calm before the storm. The solar flux index is at 174, and there is a LARGE double sunspot starting to face the earth with a 50% chance of a Class-M solar flare outburst in the next couple of days. Things should be getting better during the day and just past sunset if we're lucky. Mike

Marconi, It's an Array Solutions AIM Antenna Analyzer, either the 4170 or the UHF model. Cannot tell since the header has been stripped from view. There are tabs at the bottom: one is called LIMIT, and that is where you set the bandwidth measurement limits. Going to setup menu at the top...
