Without the counterpoise (or radials) you are missing half the antenna. It is an antenna that is for mobile use so the sheet metal of the car provides the counterpoise for the antenna to work right. So without that and mounted the way you did, you would need to provide the counterpoise, usually...
Only real point is that you can't really know what is going on unless you actually get on the radio to find out. If you just go by different predictions you might almost never get on the radio while always waiting for the optimum conditions.
Now planing a DXpedition that is going to be...
Yeah I know but when you can get them that cheap and they are working you an get some use out of them. If it quits on after a couple years you just look for another one.
A lot depends on how much use you will get from test gear. If you are just keeping it in case your own rig goes bonkers...
Yes an external soundcard interface unit between the 901 and a laptop or PC.
Here; https://tigertronics.com/slusbmain.htm
If you follow their instructions completely you can't go wrong setting it up.
Then whatever software you want to use, some are freeware some not. FLDigi is commonly used...
I see Commodore 64s at hamfests that are working all the time. Probably a few on Ebay as well.
Pretty old school stuff you have there! It is all a lot easier with a more current radio with built in sound card and your computer! But you have what you have so I guess you go with configuring all of...
I see older Cushmans for under $200 at hamfests.
HP 8640B signal generators for around that too or less.
Scope? Tektronix 465B or 475 can be had for around $150 with a probe or two.
Industry standard stuff for many years!
Check Craigslist for something local.
The old cheap stuff from the 50s...
Yes. The crystal age is over!! It makes more sense ( if you just GOTTA have CB in your ham rig) to get a newer rig that is easy to mod. Just about everything in a newer rig is very worthwhile to have and worth the money.
Back in the late 60s when I was on CB a lot there were a couple people giving out SSB "callsigns".
I had SSB-2626 and Mercury 140. There were other groups of numbers as well. Apollo numbers were common.
I think they only loosely kept track of who had what number. Probably was just listed by what...
Some of the early sideband CB rigs were double sideband. It may have been a Tram Titan, or Titan 2? Neat old radios. I have never seen one in real life. Not even at a hamfest swapmeet.
As I recall, Johnson had one as well. I had a friend that had one of them in his car for a while. In those days if it looked like you had a mobile radiotelephone you'd be pretty cool...I guess..
Edit: Here ya go. Messenger 130A
Clearly he is implying using it on other radio service frequencies, not stuff like that.
I ran across a seller on Ebay that used a ham call for his Ebay ID. I asked him about it and he had no idea. It was just a ID name that meant something to him that happened to be a ham radio callsign. It was...
There is a law preventing the use of an issued callsign from one service in another.
It isn't in Part 95 or Part 97 but I did run across it once in the FCC regulations somewhere. Probably was in some administrative regs or something like that. I'd have to do some serious digging to find it again.
