I just confirmed a big problem. Cb transmissions are heard through the PA when the CB is in PA. I placed the Cb in PA and then transmitted with handheld and I was heard on the speaker connected to the PA connection. The PA does not seem to be isolated from the CB circuit.
I need to clarify something that I said about the PA function that was inaccurate. When you switch to PA there is a static that is heard through the speaker that sounds very similar to the static when the radio is in cb mode (unlike the galaxy I'm familiar with). Once the mic is keyed the static...
Lol no worries. It is still morning here in Oregon so good afternoon to you! Ask all of the questions you need to. I spent many years as the Lead Technical Trainer for Jacuzzi Group Worldwide's spa division prior to relocating to Oregon. I was responsible for conducting regional and...
Thanks Bob I appreciate it. I can also order any necessary stuff on Amazon if needed and have it here quickly...if it can be acquired on there. Don't break the eggs!
It was also recommended that I spray the dial rotator and switches down with contact cleaner. DeoxIT seems to be the gold standard. If do, would you recommend the DeoxIT D5 or the D100. The D100 comes in a spray and a liquid. The liquid as a brush applicator or a needle applicator. Sorry for all...
Actually the more I look at their website the less confident I am that they would have what I need. If some of these components are present in a Galaxy 959 I can borrow them out of the one I have with the suspected bad final.
There's this place in town that seems like they'd have what I need:

I also have a whole box of caps that I purchased for the initial recap.
Schematic is on order and I can pick up some alligator clips. I can salvage some off my "third hand" right now if it won't involve destroying them otherwise I can pick some up tomorrow.
At this point, if we exclude the meter issue, it is just missing modulation. I think the mic wiring at the plug is correct however how that corresponds to the wiring at the mic element might vary. I'm thinking more and more that the modulation issue is radio related and not mic related but I am...
Yes the radio receives a nearby signal from a handheld I have as well as signals from others in the valley and it is heard on the internal speaker at what I would consider a correct volume level. The meter does not respond correctly on transmit or receive. It does transmit a carrier (strong one)...
This will be my last post to allow you guys to catch up since my chain of posts is getting pretty long lol. I went through and compared the Astatic recommended wiring for the Romar to that of the stock mic wiring (Cobra) vs. the Midland and the Astatic recommendation lines up with the Midland...
I also can't remember if I mentioned this from the get go. When I first opened the radio it had a blown ceramic cap near the front of the board. Based on my reading they said they usually fail as a result of age/fatigue. It's probably hard to tell in the picture but it was a pretty decent pop...
So there are two wires that feed the meter; a blue and a white. The blue runs to the trimmer in the picture and the white runs to a group of wires that includes the gray and white wire from the mic jack. Just in case this is helpful in some way.
