Yes the radio receives a nearby signal from a handheld I have as well as signals from others in the valley and it is heard on the internal speaker at what I would consider a correct volume level. The meter does not respond correctly on transmit or receive. It does transmit a carrier (strong one) on my handheld which I believe is the same strength that it did prior to my monkeying with it that was confirmed by a local 7 miles away.

At this point, if we exclude the meter issue, it is just missing modulation. I think the mic wiring at the plug is correct however how that corresponds to the wiring at the mic element might vary. I'm thinking more and more that the modulation issue is radio related and not mic related but I am far, far, far from competent when it comes to this lol.
Yeah I ordered my copy earlier. I just checked the meter and it deflects on both transmit and receive.
I hate to say it....but I think we need to have the schematics to go much farther.
but.... that said..... we also have to figure out a way for YOU to be able to test for RF and modulated AUDIO... when all you have is a meter.

Schematic is on order and I can pick up some alligator clips. I can salvage some off my "third hand" right now if it won't involve destroying them otherwise I can pick some up tomorrow.
Supposedly, and I think this info came from another post, you can use another radio as a signal generator but I could be wrong.

What you would be looking for is maybe a small signal diode or two, a capacitor or two, maybe a resistor........
This would be a tiny little project.... built on something like a tongue depressor... or a popsicle stick......you clip IT to your test leads......to the meter......and when you touch the probe to points inside the circuit you will see SOME voltage on the meter that HOPEFULLY will tell you if you see some kind of signal....... it is called an RF probe. if you have nothing else available..... it can help.......

Actually the more I look at their website the less confident I am that they would have what I need. If some of these components are present in a Galaxy 959 I can borrow them out of the one I have with the suspected bad final.
I am about to go do a curbside grocery pickup. If you can.... let me send you a couple of circuit diagrams tomorrow. And I promise you .... they will be dirt simple. It doesn't take much to make an RF probe at all.
I think we need to wait on your schematic too get here since we are going to be checking out functionality INSIDE the radio.... so we will have a little time. Patience is "golden" here..... as we can't do anything until we have the "map of the territory" (the schematic) and some kind of tool that will tell us what we have at certain points. This will still be tricky.....but it is the best chance we have.

It was also recommended that I spray the dial rotator and switches down with contact cleaner. DeoxIT seems to be the gold standard. If do, would you recommend the DeoxIT D5 or the D100. The D100 comes in a spray and a liquid. The liquid as a brush applicator or a needle applicator. Sorry for all of the questions. Regardless of how the smokey turns out I'll need it for the Pace.
