What W5LZ is trying to say is that if you were to compare a perfect omnidirectional antenna with one that is directional (assuming they are both being fed the exact same amount of power) you see that as the directional antenna's pattern gets stronger in one direction, there is a lack of strength...
Most of this makes sense to me, although I'm not an expert in antenna theory. From what I understand about phasing with dual (or more) fixed antennas, you can actually change the directionality of the RF field by changing the phase. Many AM and shortwave radio stations have groups of towers or...
Thanks all! I'll post all about it as soon as I have it and have a chance to use it a bit.. Looks very nice and just about everything I've read about it has been positive.
Is what legal? Parking somewhere, throwing up an antenna and doing some HF work? Sure! You just go out and find some public land like a park or something, preferably up as high as you can get, you park your car, set up your antenna and radio and get crackin'..
I used a Tuner +2 with my old Mark III for a long time, then got a Night Eagle. I liked the Night Eagle best, and not just because it looked good with the radio, but IIRC it was amplified I just turned it down a good bit.
Also agreed! I can handle a single, simple NASA-like roger beep, but other than that I don't like any of those gimmicks. The pretty much never sound good or help the operator sound good.
^Agreed. My car has one low-key dual-band antenna.. and that's all it'll ever have. If I go with some sort of mobile HF capability it will be in the form of an antenna I can deploy when parked, like a mast-mounted dipole or something.
Exploding wasn't even on my radar actually.. I was thinking more along the lines of radiation leakage. I doubt that a tiny reactor built with '60s-70s technology (or even today's for that matter) could be 100% guaranteed to withstand a severe accident capable of tearing the rest of the car apart.
I have an HTX-10 I've used for a long time.. I love mine! They're very similar to the Magnum 257, but they don't have variable RF power with is kind of lousy since that's a feature I'd like to have. Great radio for the price..
I've seen something similar happen due to RF feeding back into the amplifier. I'd check your layout, maybe reposition your amp. Also, installing ferrite chokes on power and microphone cables can help. It could also be that your supply voltage is sagging when you're transmitting.
Actually those RM and Zetagi amps are not very good designs, and thus don't really represent the current state-of-the-art. Today's MOSFET technology is nothing short of incredible really.
You'd be pretty hard-pressed to find any modern commercial high-power RF amplifiers that are still using...
that's an excellent point. For reference I live in the middle of an urban area, with highrises every direction. Forestation can be worse than that, but if in a rural area you've always got the option of walking to a hilltop or high point.
That's true, YMMV..
I always point out though, whenever the "you always get what you pay for" point is raised, that these are actually a very nice break from that logic. The eham reviews for both the Quansheng TG-UV2 and Wouxun KG-UVX are better than nearly every radio from the big three...
I have no problems hitting repeaters 7-10mi away at full quieting or nearly so. I can key repeaters that are 20+mi distant, but my signal quality at that range is not that great.
^Seconded. I own a KG-UV2D and I love it. I also own a Quansheng TG-UV2 (eham review here, can be purchased here). I love it also. IMO between the two of them they represent the best values in dual-band handhelds. The only difference is in the price (Quansheng is cheaper), the physical...
Unfortunately I have no details, and I would expect that any real details (such as name of owner, address, etc) might be difficult to find due to the slightly illegal nature of the business.
It's a good thing that they never made that.. I can only imagine what a wreck involving one of those would be like given atomic technology in those days.
