I've had mine since 2001. Love it. I have the Inrad 2.1Khz crystal filter in the RX side, a Collins mechanical 2.5 on the TX, the MD100 desk mic, and a TiniCat-847 interface. This rig has done everything I've wanted out of it. You have to do the open TX mod to get 60 meters.

The guy that plays the bagpipes is Mike Katz, and he is one of the BEST pipers in the world.
I think I would put up an Imax rather than butcher your 5/8 homebrew., That would be a shame, especially if you couldn't get it to work. The Imax might be a little step down from the homebrew, but I think it will do quite a bit better than the 1/2 wave hack that you're thinking about doing.

I think the TX on the Lincoln / 2510 is second to none in it's class in SSB and FM modes. The 29xx can sound really...
I'm having a bother trying to find them for sale new in the states.
It seems like someone has maybe made off with my Wilson 1000. If I have to replace it, I'd rather go with the Z180 if I can find one for a reasonable price.
Otherwise, I'll just get another W1000....
