I would assume that it is damaged, it used to sound fine but something happened and it no longer sounds good. I can try putting it back together and run it on my Galaxy, but even when driven with the variable on the S45 all the way down, still sounded bad.

Guys... I understand that completely. But that doesn't help me fix the amp. Its not going back in that setup, its gonna go in my modest pile of extra equipment.

In that phone conversation, Dave said pretty much the same thing that the CB World Informer page did. He said the traces are too close together and suffer from capacitive coupling, if I recall correctly. Peel off the offending traces and you're golden. Anyway, radio is ordered, can't wait!

Good advice for sure. I told him it was too much drive, but I guess the extra watts on the meter are always quite tempting. Still trying to fix this KL though, so I can use it as a backup or something.

You can get/build a boost converter, but to get that higher voltage output than input, its going to draw more amperage. There is an efficiency loss as well, however slight that may be. That battery doesn't look like a AGM cell, so first step I would say is to grab a quality AGM battery...

I'm no radio guru but theres probably more to it than just turning a couple pots. You should probably have an o-scope at minimum to make sure you're not overmodulating. Do you have the service manual? Thats a good place to start.
