Looking at getting a 2950DX from DTB and noticed he offers a "IF Filter mod".
The website describes it as:

SSB IF filter modification for RCI 2950/70DX, and RCI6900 series single-sideband radios with surface-mount (smt) circuit boards. Reduces excessive sideband receiver noise associated with these chassis.

Is SSB noise still a problem with the latest 2950DX? In other words, would it be worth it to have this done? ($25)

If he's using the CBC International filter, I can say that it works. Or at least it does on my Cobra 2000. I don't know what method he is using though, so it's hard to say.

A couple weeks back I emailed Dave and asked him is he offered or recommended any receive upgrades such as the "image rejection mod" ? He said the only receive mod he would suggest is to trim the circuit traces under the SSB IF filter to reduce spurious SSB receive noise. Well I ordered a 2950 on line and he added that mod to his page for $25. I've had the radio a couple weeks and am pleased with it so far. Since I ordered it new from DTB I can't compare a before and after. Been a LONG time fan of the rci stuff but this is my first of the new smt board. It does have cleaner ssb receive than my 15 yr old 2970(y)

Another positive is DTB actually does a correct receive alignment. Too many people think they are saving money buying a 2950 from copper or h&y. They convert it, maybe do a little peaking of the wattage and done. Then they wonder why the receive is average. Out of the box it's a 10m radio and set from the factory as such. Once converted they all need some extra touches and tunes. You just can't get many people to grasp that concept. :bdh:

Driver I do agree. Glad I didn't buy one from copper....just about did. DTB does a tune and align included in the purchase price. You might pay a little more but the old saying is true most of the time....you get what ya pay for.

Ahh, cool. Just got off the phone with Dave and he confirmed that indeed, the mod is removing/trimming the traces under the filter. Guess I'll be ordering a 2950 with the mod very soon! :D

Well Duster I'll tell ya I have so much faith in Dave at DTB radio I am going to send him my 2009 RCI 2950DX for the mod just to see. Seems you have issues with a lot of radios and think someone is trying to sell snake oil or something. Dave is one of the most honest radio techs I have known and would trust him with anything.

All I said, is that I'd like to hear a side by side or a before and after. I am just plain interested in hearing the difference.

Why are you implicating something sinister?

I'm not saying Dave has to do it. I'd just want to hear it for myself.
