    spend my money!

Used Rohn AX tower, 40 ft = $125 Paint = ~$80 Bolts, nuts, etc = ~$20 Homemade ginpole = ~$10 (10 ft pipe with pulley welded on, cheap rope) Hole = Free, shovels are great. Concrete = ~$150 u-cart. Grounding = ~$50 As said, you don't need a yagi on top at first. Just use it as a dipole...

    spend my money!

Drop $1k on a used free-standing Rohn tower, digging a hole, rebar, and concrete. You should be able to get to at least 40 ft with that. That's one thing I regret with my station. I wish I spent more money on my tower. 40ft of Rohn tower in my case gets me above the "bowl" I'm in, but...

I TX unlock all my radios, not because I TX out of band, but because if I'm in an emergency, I want any and all frequencies at my disposal.

    Building antennas

For my feedpoint, I used 1/2" PVC pipe. I put a long notch through two opposite sides, then slid my twin-lead through that...I then split the twin lead outwards, and crimped/soldered on some lug connectors. I also crimped/soldered some lug connectors onto the dipole wire as well. I then...

Speech processors: do you use one?

Hello, I use an FT101, but you should be able to run any mic through any mic input. HOWEVER. You must roughly match the mic impedance between the mic and the transceiver, as well as the dBv of signal. Wrong impedance and too strong of signal leads to distortion, and possibly equipment...

Speech processors: do you use one?

EQ is all I need! I have the mic gain and main balanced out to where there's no ALC action on the transceiver. I produce more of a mid-range punch that I use for most all my contacts. It's a pretty accurate reproduction of my voice... I don't try to fool myself into thinking I'm Don...

    Yaesu FT-270R Review

This is the Yaesu FT-270R. It is the bigger cousin to the FT-250R, and carries a few different features from it. The FT270R is absolutely rugged. It's made out of an extremely solid aluminum construction, and because of this, it has some heft to it. It weighs in at 13.8 ounces with antenna...

Need help with purchasing a decent set of Walkies!

To operate on amateur bands, 144 - 148 mhz or 420 - 450 mhz, you need your amateur radio license. To operate on GMRS frequencies / power settings, you need a GMRS license. The only range you can legally operate on without a license is 2w on MURS: 151.820 151.880 151.940 154.570 154.600 These...

    Trucker radios.

In Michigan, there's a linked repeater system that covers most of the state on 2m/1.25/70cm/33cm/22cm. I've talked to a couple truckers on it. W8HVG linked repeater system.

    Handheld radio for hunting

I use an FT270R. I wish I took pictures after I was at an outdoor concert in the rain / tornados...it was absolutely covered in mud. Still worked great though! They run about $150, and the battery life is pretty great. Full charge, and you'll be able to have your radio on all day.

    Diamond base station antennas

With high gain antennas, you won't be able to work OSCARs due to the radiation pattern. Just something to consider!
