I had high hopes for how well it operated (it was already a cool looking radio), but price-wise, I think the closest to it is the QT60 PRO. Too many radios that have that "If only this had the 'X' (fill in the feature) of the other radio, and it would be perfect"
It's a good radio. My only complaint (same as most all other boards made there) has to do with the volume control. Put 3 radios side-by-side: Cobra 148gtl, Yaesu FT-710, and the QT-60 and/or QT-60 Pro. Power up the radios and slowly turn the volume control. The Cobra and Yaesu will gradually go...
Usually, 38 is a rats nest of competing signals, and when it's like that, stations will move to 37 and sometimes 39. But lately, (besides 16), SSB has been busy on channels 33-40 from what I hear in SW of the Houston area (and just about anywhere you'd want to try above 40). The local channel...
I've experienced the encoder issue a few times, along with a weird issue: If I'm on 38 and put either RB or NB/ANL "ON" and move to another channel, 39 or 37, they're no longer "ON" (unless I go back to 38). It doesn't happen all of the time, but enough to make it annoying. Nice review.
Haunt QRZ.com's for-sale forum, or the one on QTH (https://swap.qth.com/). You'll have to check QRZ frequently, because equipment goes fast ... really fast. I got mine from one of the two, pre-COVID, but don't remember which one exactly. It came with the box, manual, original mic, and had the...
I always liked Yaesu's FT-757GX. I finally bought one, with the matching power supply it sits on top of for $250. The simplicity of these older radios can be a plus, and while my FT-710 has a bunch of features, many times I prefer listening to the 757.
Same here. I have my McKinley and 203 amp mounted in our SUV. When my wife isn't riding shotgun I'll plop one of my larger radios on the passenger seat, and use that. It would be nice to have something akin to the new Washington or QT60 Pro with a removable head like Yaesu's FT-891, but the...
They were sold out when I got there, so I went to Amazon, which still showed it in stock for $207 and used some bonus points I'd been saving up ($152 total). One-day shipping (arrived today). I need this like I need a hole in the head, but I wanted to compare it to the non-plus QT-60.
I think of 38 as the "Playoff channel" where idiots practice being bigger idiots until finally graduating to the Super Bowl channel. I'm about 40 miles SW of Houston and I've heard SSB QSOs on channels 34 to 40 and have noticed the Idiot factor has been creeping down to 37 and above 40. I'm sure...
I prefer the heavy ones with a big transformer. I had an Astron 35a supply that was pretty darn heavy, and powered just about everything for 10+ years, but lost it in a divorce. Another older one, that I kept at work (divorce proof), was a Kenwood PS-30, which is still in use today, and still...
I suspect they are way different PCBs inside each model, perhaps one is a long board and the new one a half board, but the only feature I've read about was regarding the noise reduction circuit. Is there something else? Thanks in advance!
Two answers: 1). Talking DX, I've talking around the U.S., Canada, Ireland, and Europe with 12PEP using sideband. 2). Locally, I've talked 15 miles (+ or -) mobile-to-mobile on SSB, but where I live in Texas, the closest I get to a hilly region or mountains is a freeway overpass , so your...
