Amplifiers with "Clip" warning indicators, help keep a lot of unwanted DC off of those voice coils. That helps you keep the bass set to the point where you can feel it, but not to where you can smell it yet.
Yes I agree with both posts above but when you're in the world of competition it's a different story. Some of those guys will bleed them to destruction to get that last dB to take the gold. Fun times no doubt.
I did a little competition but not hard, I was more into sound quality and aesthetics of it all. The good o'l days.
Sometimes while out and about I'll hear someone proudly pumping out distortion because they don't know better. It almost makes me relapse to help make BASS great again
Definitely stay out of distortion/ clipping. Putting 5kw on subs that are only rated at 3kw puts a limit on how far it can be pushed. The charging system will only let me go so far too, just watch the voltage. The clip / distortion limit can be different for each song too. I fly by the seat of my pants between stoplights and sometimes the voice coils let me know when to give it a rest. The American made voice coils that the builders use can take a lot of punishment, there is a reason that they don't get them from China. How many times can they get scorched before they fail? My last pair of Soundqubed subs went several years. And then I found the limit. The current pair of Skar EVL subs are doing great, but now it's time to buy batteries....
