1991 cobra 146 made in phillippines

if its keying up with decent output but no audio first thing to check is the AM reg/mod transistor at rear right of radio,
measure the voltage on the bias test point board, should be about 6v on AM & about 13v on SSB,
if its close to your supply voltage on all modes the 2sa1012 reg is likely short,

good luck.

Your memory serves you wrong, the Cobra 146 is/was the same as the Uniden 122 XL,President AR-144,Realistic TRC-451/453/465 and a few more. All were decent radios but often overlooked.

Hey ..
Ok...So i had a Brain Fart..
Still..the 146 was an excellent radio..
I never did care for the 148 though.

Unsure about newer versions..
Back in early 80's though..
the 146 (though fewer features) was a better performer.

Also though..
Is better to simply add an amp verses messing with the board

My problem with the amp is my company i work for will not let me have one in my truck. That is why i was looking for way to mosfet it or rfx it. I had an amp on a galaxy 44 in my truck till they caught me with and made me take it out. So if anybody knows how to fet a 146 pr install an rfx kit please let me know. Thank you greatly

i would never swap a good rf transistor for a switching fet, would never buy a newer cb with switching fet outputs either,
the manufacturers went to switching fets because they cost next to nothing vs sourcing real rf transistors.

I think mosfets work just fine!

Nothing wrong with the 148 GTL. It has the best dual conversion board ever made... Beats the pants off any 146 GTL any day...
