One of the other drivers in the company I work for gave me two radios to fix for him. He said they have been sitting in his closet for years doing nothing.
He gave me a 2510 and a 2970.:
I hooked up both radios on my bench just to check them out because he didn't remember what is wrong with them.
The 2510 has no audio. I hooked up the jumper on the back to get the internal speaker to work. I plugged in a working radio (cobra) next to the 2510 and keyed the cobra and I heard a pop from the 2510 but no audio. I keyed the 2510 and heard a pop in the cobra and the meter moved like the 2510 was transmitting. This was all done without a microphone. I just put a screwdriver in the mic socket of the 2510 to make it switch the TX.
The 2970 I hooked up and had a microphone wired for it. It is always in the TX mod. Even if I unplug the microphone.
I'm going to try to put some time into these radios this weekend. Also check and wire up mics for both to start with. I'm thinking that there's a problem with a switching TR in the 2970 that allows it to change from RX to TX. Or just a bad solder joint. Theses are just guesses as I haven't put any time in them yet!
As far as the 2510 I'm thinking along the lines of the glue that they put on the board to hold components has caused a ground issue. This is what I've read about these radios in the past causing problems.
If anyone has any comments or input on these radio and how to fix them I'm all ears.
One plus I have is that I live in the same town as Roger Bird but I want to try to get them going myself. If not than I might bother Roger with the 2510.
