i did the cb retards mod a while ago. then i did it with a bigger transistor and it worked and then took it apart and forgot to make sure it didnt short anything and it did and i didnt have a fuseholder on the radio and now it doesnt deadkey but it swings and sounds fine. anyone know if this is fixable.

if you jumped the anti-spiking diode with this mod , it isn't always the best thing to do , that diode is there for a purpose. you have swing and audio and no DK , with a cap and "resistor" mod , the "resistor" determends the DK on the radio . Your fuseholder is only for if you were to hook the radio up backwards , blows fuse rather then the pertect diode, even then ,the diode can be replaced for the fix but I don't think that's your problem here. Lucky for you the radio is modulating and shows power swing. I have no clue what you have done here ? unless the resistor in your mod has burnt up which determinds the DK? I personally use 1 watters for those kinds of mods. What you could do is simply put the radio back to normal as it was , if everything looks good after that you can just start over again with your mod if need be.

like switch said check your resistor, and maybe check you soldering to make sure you have good connections.

when I did a swing mod one time on a 949, I didnt have a good solder when I put the diode inline with the resistor and I had absolutely no dk but swing was good.

I think your right 74 , now that I recall it . The Retards use the transistor and cap as Plowboy did before them or visa versa .

The mod I've seen and done has no resistor(s). Goes straight to ground and uses a TIP31 and cap installed into the board where a jumper was removed.
That's the combo in the photograph.
RF Gain pot is used.

here is an idea....

how about some basic electronics tests?? i see all kinds of suggestions, but none that tell you how to track down the deffective component.

like testing the base emitter voltages. the emitter should be about .5v-.6v below the base. if you have 3.5v at the base you should have about 3v at the emitter. if you have something much lower than a .5v.-.6v difference, then the transistor is bad.

you can also ohm the pot and resistors out.

just use some electronic logic and you can find the defective component/s pretty easy.
