980 Screen Scratch Fix

Sleepwalkr if the beep becomes annoying, which I am sure it will. Might take a while but you will learn to hate it lol. Seriously though, the mod to make he beep just about entirely inaudible is very easy. Remove a small resistor and it's done. Can be done with a plastic knife or even a razor blade. Make sure no power is on the radio before doing so. Google uniden 980 beep mod and a good YouTube vid shows exactly which one it is as well as the opening the rx/tx on the clarifier. The clarifier mod I didn't do but watched the vid for the beep mod. Here is the link.

I did this mod and worked great. It was hard to scrape off so I heated it with a soldering iron first (while praying) ! It came out OK.

Lol! I've been looking at the 980 as a replacement for my aging Grant XT, however that beep thing has kept me away. I've been searching for the new units (without the beep) but I think it is a myth. So I will most likely have to do the simple mod myself.....I better start praying now cause simple things for me have a way of getting more complex.

The beep isn't as bad as you might think. My grant 2 has the kill button for the beep and I find myself not paying attention and leaving it on most of the time. The same thing with the Lincoln 2. The only time I turn off the beep with the Lincoln is when I'm working 10 meters in 1 kHz steps. It gets annoying then.

To add to the conversation about scratch removal....

I picked up this older Yaesu Ft-50R for free but had a large scratch across the clear display and across the plastic body, quite deep too! With the 50R's display bezel also acting as a magnifier for the LCD, this gouge was not letting me see all of the readout.
I stole some of my wife's nail repair, the stuff is clear and like liquid plastic. I used this to fill in the "Grand Canyon" on the bezel with a bit of of overkill.
Then I used a brand new razor blade to form the convex curve of the lens followed by a good polish with Colgate tooth polish. This made the lens almost like new again!
BTW Yaesu does not have this part any more.... Lastly I used NOVUS #2 and #1 for the final polish and the repaired display lens looks like new again and no distortion of the LCD and easy view! Two years now and the nail hardener has not yellowed.
I use NOVUS to clean up most any display bezel but there are some that are just too soft and the plastic screen protector is a great idea!

Novus works very well. We use it in the sign industry and it's used on aircraft windshields.

There was mention on another forum, that the operator obtained a replacement from Uniden. Unfortunately, he did not list the part number for the replacement face plate for the 980 and I'm not seeing them anywhere.

The zagg or something like that, screen protectors that come in the universal size work great. I used one for a long time and just removed it not too long ago and replaced, screen underneath still looks new. I've had mine for a long time as well and the screen protector is an investment with these radios IMO.

Haven't used one yet on my HTX-10 yet but that's the next radio to get the face lift. The newer zaggs are made of "glass". I put one on my wife's iPhone 6 and she dropped her car keys on the screen. It looked like the phone screen had shattered from a bad break but it was the zagg. I was relieved when I pulled it off and found no phone damage. The original zaggs are more like a rubber membrane. Those have the solution and squeegee.
