Has anyone figured out a way to hack one for extra channels yet? My 257hp died and I'm thinking this to get me by but keep looking back at a 959b also. I like my 257 but found myself never going outside of 27.185 - 27.555. Before anyone says it, no I'm not buying another 10 meter radio and no the 257 isn't for sale....I own 2 of them but since 1 is out I need a new mobile unit.

No channel hacks for the 980 I know of that works right. Someone has tried it and I believe they fried a few radios in the process but no extra channels. You can open the clarifier but it's not needed as the radios are dead on freq out of the box. Great radio for the money!! Not a powerhouse but will put out nice clean, clear audio with a good mic. The noise cancelling Bluetooth mic they sell is a good mic for the 980 ans can be had for under $50. Hope this helps. What happened to the 257hp if you don't mind me asking. Did the rfx85 take a dump or is it something else? Just curious as I owned 3 of these at one point and now only have 1. Had to mess with the bias a bit as it was throwing a carrier on SSB. Got it resolved but don't use the radio much at all anymore. But like you I won't sell my last one. It's a good radio but they should have been built more like the optima mk3. Better quality knobs and such and a different screen color as that blue just killed my eyes at night!! Anyway. Just my 2 pennies on the 980. It's a great radio for the money.

Well, Les from LesComm cracked it. I don't know if he ever got it "perfected" but this video shows ecpxtra channels. It might not be something you want to tackle though. May want to just send it to him. Give him a call. Tell him hello for me and hope he likes the power supply.

you might want to look at his later video where he says its a waste of time and he gave up on it ....he had to reload the firmware each time he turned the radio on ...for the money just buy a grant 2 and you have what you want plus alot more for the same $$ as the noisy 980 in the same sized box

If you're really intent on soldering in the thing turn the carrier on AM up to 4 watts and 12 watts PEP SSB and have fun replacing the final transistor every couple of months.

As for the 257......it began with the volume not working correctly then about a week later the power adjustment knob stuck on low power for 3 -4 power cycles then it worked great for a few days and now it won't power up and when it shut off last the display went from blue to an almost white and buzzed then died. My tech has it but is busy and said it may take a while. He is letting me borrow a used 959 that he rebuilt with a Viagra board in it that I used on my way home this evening. Seems to work great with a receive that surprised me. I may just make him an offer on it.

Oh, crud. Good to know Mike. I'll bet that radio (radios...since he went through a few of them) caused him to lose some hair.

My volume switch took a crap in one and took out the CPU with it. Hopefully yours isn't like mine. But sounds about like what mine did. Started as a bad spot in volume control that just became worse, then one day turned on radio and out came the smoke! Needless to say the radio is now a donor for my last remaining 257hp. Wish they would have built them more like the optima mk3 with some better quality controls like volume, clarifier, and such. Yeah I am an optima mk3 fan boy I suppose!! Hope you get it resolved.
