I bought a raggedy General Washington off eBay the other day, everything that glitters ain’t gold, remember this.

It came in the mail, looks like it’s almost new, was pleased. Powered it up, no magical puffs of smoke, pleases again. Hooked it up to my service monitor and tested the output, again, much pleased.

Problem with me being pleased came when I tested the receiver, completely dead. Turning the monitor up to a signal as strong as S9+30 dbm, absolutely nothing. A hum and steady ticking or popping is all that can be heard.

Talkback is fine, the PA is fine, transmitted audio is fine but there is absolutely nothing on receive. No meter movement at all. I figured maybe the protection diodes had an issue, changed them, nothing. Thought maybe TR17 was bad, nothing upon changing it out. My other thread about a tester is in relation to this radio and this problem.

I’ve tried swapping out and testing also, TR16, the squelch amp/control, nodda. I have checked or changed every disc cap from the beginning of the tap, I believe it’s C43, all the way to about L8 I believe. They all show good.

I’m burned out. I’ve walked away from it twice and moved on to other repairs and projects but when I go back to this devil radio, I’m still fresh out of ideas. I feel like maybe I’m overlooking something simple, so I’m asking for ideas or input here, my brain is frazzled at the moment. I’ll give a better account of what parts I’ve tested or replaced in my next posting. Thanks!

The two right there near L6, I been up all night long and my brain is fried. I’m not sure I made things clear in my first post, I might that all screwed up.

Uniden or Galaxy variant?

One is mobile and is a lot like the 98VHP...

One uses a LM324/326 Quad Op amp - while the other uses more like the Cobra 142 - the following is for you if you have the Uniden variant...

Washington's use TR15 like an Op amp that sets Squelch but also uses a capacitor C27 for control.

IF the caps are shorted out because they're dry, it can cause the symptoms you're dealing with.

Might need a couple of quick re-capper' parts before it finishes firing up.

TP 3 is the "detector" amp - there are electrolytic caps in that area too C24, C25, C26 and C180...

Line that feeds from there to the front PIN diode section uses TR12, FET 1 and TR11 for AGC and front end control...RF gain affects TR9 - so look for RX voltages - and if the Clarifier has been messed with - look for that section - because it may have killed TR9.

It has been around a while...

I wish the Force had forced me away from this evil radio, this is coming from a dark evil overlord Sith. I’ll get back on it here in a few hours and see if I can find what I’ve overlooked.

inject a 1000uV (or higher) signal in to the antenna jack.

connect your scope to the antenna jack and set it so you can see the signal coming in.

now follow the receive path to see where you lose the signal.

I'll do the very first parts to get you started.

check both sides of C43 (im using a galaxy DX33 so i hope part numbers are the same)
then C45. then emitter of TR17. then collector of TR17. then L7 and L8 etc...

the signal should be getting larger as it gets amplified. when you hit a place where the signal lowers significantly or goes away completely, you have found your bad section/part.

RPC,
We need a board # to really get into this....

My latest adventures with CB radio were the PC-412/TR296/Cobra2000 variety.

I was trying to trace it with the scope, seems it’s going through just fine but you can’t hear jack. I’ll post the board number in a bit. Thanks!

EPT360014B. Pretty simple huh? I’ve had low receive radios in here before but nothing like this, everything I check shows to be fine but no receive.
