As you know, I have a rig to listen to before going for my ticket, but listening has raised a question. Do Hams on 40 meters ever do more than checkins? ? ?

Weird

Now on 20 meters people are talking, mostly monologues if length on a single transmission means anything. I assume there is someone else in the conversation, but 10 minute key up to talk about the Shure microphone . . . I just couldn't stand by after so long to hear whether anyone else was on the other end . . .

Only partly serious, folks.
Just having fun while curious about the particular band habits.

40m does have it fair share of useless nets I must say. It is a good daytime band for regional contacts and I guess it gives all the retired and unemployed folks something to do during the day. 80m has to be the monologue band and not 20m from what I hear. Yes 20 has it's share but the old buzzards on 80m take the cake. in fact a well known phrase on 80m is an old buzzard transmission and means a really looooooooooooooooooooong boring single transmission. Some old buzzards make contact, talk all about everything and then end the single transmission with a 73 and then they are gone leaving the poor bastard they contacted with about two words to say. I always say those people do not want to talk WITH someone but rather AT someone. :D

It depends a lot on where you live, too. 80 meters here has everything from boring nets to absolute mayhem in the evenings. It actually sort of makes it interesting, lol. 40 seems to have a lot of nets also, but when the band goes long there are some interesting contacts to be made.

about the only place on 40 i hang out any more is 7.173

80 meter outlaws, if you can think about it then it will be found on 80 meters, anything from playing music, to complaining about the government.

As well, for some QRP is 500-600 watts as well. :(

That is so true.

I have talked to my friend down by Gainesville FL, he was running some MFJ monoband rig with 10 watts output.

Copied him and 5-7 into Atlanta GA.

well, heck,........... why don't ya try 60 meters?

there are a lot of us east of the mississippi that run 5.346.5 and follow the GREYLINE.
home made dipolies @ 50 watts ERP max. many of us are qrp @ less than 5 watts
I often work 1000 miles at 1 watt.

If you scan the band you will occasionally run across a CQ call. I make contacts all the time on 40m while mobile. Early this week there was the School Club Round Up. I ran across several school clubs making CQ calls and was able to work them. Looking forward to when you upgrade. Maybe I'll catch you on one of the bands sometime.

Slowly reading and answering questions heading that way.
I'll look forward to a lot of new opportunities including working your station.
