A question regarding travel with VHF/UHF radios

OK, a question about traveling with a VHF/UHF radio.

Does 2 Meter, or other bands, have a 'travel frequency' like CB has Ch19? I figured there is probably a fair number of 144/440 radios out there, some of them have to be driving around the country, right? I guess repeaters would work, but you would have to know your route.

Yes, but does it get used in much the same way as 19? Probably not, right. Excuse my lack of VHF/UHF knowledge.

You might get a response calling on 146.520 MHz but it's not guaranteed despite it being a national calling frequency. Not a great deal of people monitor it. That's why it's a good idea to take a current copy of the repeater directory with you when traveling.

So you're the guy in Michigan that I heard about that monitors 146.520 simplex.

Like I said, not a lot of people monitor it but some people do.

Go to the Library and see if they have the ARRL Repeater directory and either check it out or copy down the ones you want or try a club member or friend,the directory also gives you info like if the repeater is autopatch,linked,open,tone-access ect.....

Thats what I did......................Barrowed one from a club member,he had a lot of updates wrote in it for our state and a few others that i have found...........

I spend many hours driving day to day and more often than not i find chatter on the 52. I find that when i threw my call out on it when ever some one gets back to me they have always said " my radio was on scan and thats how i heard you". Most people keep it in their scan cycle.
i have spoken to many truckers on 52. There are people out there, you just have to get them to talk.

As far as UHF, no clue if there is a calling freq. I wouldnt expect much activity on it, at least here in New England.

You could also use K5EHX Amateur Radio Repeater Mapping to browse a map of repeaters for where you're going, then download the repeaters and program your radio using software.
