I understand this is a lower end radio, and not exoercting the world of it, but how usable is the reciever as research says the NB is crap.
Also has anyone played with one on AM and tell me if is usable in that mode of transmission?
 

Nope have a desk full of Icom's and such. Don't need a Cobra CB as you are inferring. Would make a nice dual use radio in a camper while traveling. 10, 20 meters etc and 11 meters all in one low priced unit. Yep 11 meters still is helpful traveling and not on SSB. See ya on 27.385L.....

ive seen quite a few of them for sale broken. Absolutely would avoid it like the Plague there is no reason to play with crapy radios like this when there are so many other radios out there these days at very affordable prices.
Icom 718 is also terrible too . My list of ham radios to buy would be from personal experience
Ts440, ts450, ts570, ic706 , ic7300, ic7100, ft891, ft450d, ft1000
Now if you dont want 11m am theres many other great radios but that alinco is complete trash. Ive seen several with low power output issues.
Is that something you want?
 
My Alinco SR8T served me well for like 3 years. Sold to get a Yaesu 891. Easier to get auto tuner setup and had better DSP filters and such. Also smaller for field use. If you go into the menus and set your compression properly it will sound very good from what I was told when I had it.
 
You have to consider the price point is $300.00
below the next steps up. As a primary radio no, but for traveling radio it's not a bad option price considered. It beats having a $150.00 cobra 29
and also live a dual use life. I have many primary radios and would not consider this one for that purpose. It would make a nice radio at a campsite
with a quick up antenna. Don't need a $1000+ radio at a campground. I don't buy used as people get way to much for their old gear. New is all I buy and let people keep their well used problem child's.
 
FWIW, I use a 35’ travel trailer as “home” prior to retirement. At that point of editing full-time work; travel is certainly on the agenda.

Few-to-none of the camping RVs ride well. Have someone else drive you around a few miles while you’re in the trailer. Keep your phone on (since you’ll be screeching like Grandma, “Slow down!”).

Balanced running gear plus shock absorbers (if not factory-fitted) and CENTRAMATICS help substantially.

What radio you choose will STILL be subjected to this even if in a foam-lined case.

are (ought to be) the type thought entry level (past dedicated mobile 2 or 11-Meter, etc); I offer them as price level comps.

One may disdain portable/mobile in an RV, but wouldn’t it suck to wind up with a poor radio in such where that’s all that one has left (Name-A-Disaster).

Used is certainly not always worth the headache. Ive come to learn that.
The 891 is decent new. $558 or something.
