Wayne, here is a link to the Mods for The Ameritron amps, but it looks like the early amp is going to require some more in-depth work

I found this in a review on E-Ham:

I am assuming for AM work you would use the CW position correct...

I am assuming for AM work you would use the CW position correct...

Unless you modify it for lower 'idle' current, YES. The tube heat will get out of hand on AM if you run it on "SSB" mode with the stock zero-signal current draw (idle current) on the tube.

We use a series string of 30 rectifier diodes to take the place of a zener diode. More robust, and the 3-500Z only shows color with drive. Stock "SSB" bias current will put a couple hundred Watts or so on the tube with no drive. Putting it on the "CW" position will keep the heat from the AM carrier from getting out of hand if the tube's bias is factory-stock.

Thanks... I never used an HF amp for other things if you know what I mean... But I assumed that the CW Pos. would be the choice for AM work...

I was looking at getting a BIG Ameritron... :D (AL-800H)

Thank you.
