Since most if not all of the CB shops no longer repair amplifiers, is there anybody out there that still does amplifier repair work?

According to Clay's website: We do not service or repair 23 channel or tube type transceivers or amplifiers.

I wonder if that also applies to solid state amplifiers?

Sounds pretty clear to me. No 23 ch. radios and nothing with tubes whether it is a transceiver or amplifier. Solid state amps seems to be fine. Not everybody is adept or knowledgeable about tube gear and those at are often do not want the hassle of trying to source parts.

That kind of work is still strictly "carry-in" (and carry back home) here.

A great many tube-type base amplifiers were not mechanically robust. The risk of shipping damage makes them a risky bet to ship, even if you take major precautions in preparation and packing.

Bigger legal-limit ham amplifiers are frequently built to be shipped with the heavy transformer removed, and packed in a separate carton. Making a chassis stout enough to handle that kind of impact force is expensive. My favorite example of this is the Heathkit SB220.

This disclaimer is seen on the back of Heath's model HL2200, the 1980s version of the older SB220.

If you ask someone who does this kind of repair what is the biggest aggravation with that kind of work, you'll hear about the high percentage of these that are simply abandoned. Either repaired but never picked up, or forgotten when the dollar estimate to make it work proves higher than expected.

Only one reason there are more folks who used to do this than you find still doing it.
