Another Bench upgrade

I would hope so.

I have/use:
Windex
DeOxit
rubbing alcohol
CRC contact cleaner
BrakeKleen
plastic cleaner
plastic polish

In addition to the above, I use:

Prep-sol 3919 Pre-paint degreaser
Adams tire and rubber cleaner ...
best general purpose cleaner/emulsifier I know. Excellent for knobs, cabinets, faceplates, whatever. Water soluble. I used to use Bleeche white, but their "new and improved" formula sucks.
ReaLemon 100% lemon juice ... excellent solder flux remover

i would like to add a few to the list also!

this:

this is a contact enhancer that i started using in my real job, and it eventually became part of my hobby also. really great stuff for switches that just seem too hard to switch after cleaning.

i think everyone knows about this one by now, but it is the right stuff for removing the corrosive glue from radios. it works like magic.

and this:
BARGE%202%20OZ.jpg

this is the same contact adhesive that is used at the manufacturer when seating LEDs in front panels, plastic lenses, etc.
it's like rubber cement with better holding power.
another convert from my real career.

I have found these three items to be invaluable to radio restoration.

I never tried it but there's a real old school trucker trick that I would like opinions on, mostly just out of curiosity.

Supposedly Ronson lighter fluid makes a good contact cleaner and lube for switches and pots, anyone else ever hear of this one?

Then - when all else fails...

Take item out into open field...

Using Duck-Tape<tm> attach this to the item...
BownGoopRemoverwithTimer.JPG

Set up a perimeter ring of 20 feet and remove any items you wish to keep from that area.

Set timer, walk away (or run depending on duration setting)

Once loud Boom, echoes - and any debris, finally settles - note the item no longer has any issues - nor does it even exist.

Offer customer a replacement that is something you can actually fix.

Problem solved.

Andy, you lost me what are trying to say? You want me to blow up my bench?

Nope, if you ever get the urge to blow up the product, or have an issue that just wont go away, use the above to help solve the problem.

DONT take it out on your bench...

I wish I had a Universal Solvent that you can apply and your problems will go away, but I have yet to locate that.

However, I did find some places still sell SWR Spray...

You might think that "coax cleaner" is a joke, but we actually had such a substance at the cable company. It was an industrial strength orange cleaner that was marketed, at the time, specifically for cleaning the sticky gunk on flooded coax. Nobody ever used it for that, but it worked excellent on cleaning the similar substance inside fiber bundles. When I stopped working there, I acquired a couple bottles, but I used the last of it about 5 years ago. I need to get more. It was better than any substance normally available to the public.

Shhh! Don't tell everyone - similar to WD 40 and was used as you said to remove "sludge" as if it was a plastic polymer that is similar to silicone wax - and water displacing.

Seen similar stuff used around here just recently by the power company we have, as a means to "dry out" underground power lines that have seepage from tree roots and stuff. It's for restoring the dielectric strength of the cables as a temporary stopgap measure to see if the cable needs replacement due to "perforation" by nature. IT's not permanent - but it tells the serviceman the issue is from natural events versus soneones' Spade that dug too far down to remove a dead bush.

Sometimes even 1-800-MISS-DIG - misses a shot or two...
