Another new CB'er

Properly peaked and tuned the Cobra 18 WX STII will talk well. It maintains sales, because it is the only current production CB that is single DIN size and can mount in the car radio slot. Sparky's CB Shack has been recently selling a lot of Cobra 18s. Just as everyone else said concentrate on getting the best antenna you can afford. Make sure your antenna's SWR is properly set. The Lil Wil, or K30 and Hustler mag mount antenna's tune easily and are popular sellers.
Have someone you trust do some audio checks with you to judge how your transmitted audio sounds. You radio will more than likely benefit from a mic upgrade. An Astatic 636L is a popular choice, and greatly improves audio over stock microphones, especially if the modulation limiter has been clipped in your radio, during the tune up. Some CB shops will clip the limiter as part of a peak and tune, especially in lower end CB radios. The pros and cons of a clipped modulation limiter have been a long CB debate that rivals regular beer vs. light beer. If the radio sounds well I would not worry about it. Google "CB radio and SWR" Google "CB radio modulation limiter" when you have the time. Currently, My main mobile radio is a peaked and tuned CB from 1984, an upgraded microphone, 18 feet of RG58u coax, ball mount at rear drivers side pick-up bed rail. 4 foot generic copy of a Francis antenna. My pick-up set up is not to talk skip, but if I can hear a local chances are I can talk to them. I tried to stick to basics with the setup just to see how well it will work. Keep reading and asking questions.

Bird Strikes and Fishing Poles
Here’s where I’m at now.
While traveling through a construction zone on I65; the wife driving; I see two birds tumbling through the air. Flirting, fighting, f*cking, I don’t know. But sure enough they dive straight for my truck as we come near. WHAM!!! Straight into my little wil mag mount. Off it fly’s into the truck bed. Déjà vu, been down this road before. When we get home it’s ok though. Hope it killed them. (I used to like birds)
I’ve been wanting to get this dipole antenna up in the air for some time now. Bought it off Ebay for $30, had it for a couple months now. Also got some coax, yeah the cheap kind, made in China, for another $30 – 100 ft.
After more internet browsing, saw a Ham guy camping, using a fishing pole to fling his Dipole up into the trees! I can do that! Out to the garage I go, dig, dig dig. Found my trusty “Big Stick”fishing pole. Found a few egg sinkers, let’s catch that tree.
I have a pole light out by the drive, probably 30, 35 feet tall. It’s busted up from a storm last fall. Still kinda works when it wants too. The goal was to get my line between the light fixture and the pole, a little gap there. Surprisingly enough I “hooked” it after about six try’s. Only hit the truck and the house a few times. I only had four lb. test line but it held while pulling up “paracord”. Nice stuff, another Ebay purchase, the next Walmart, shop from home.
Now for that Maple tree. It had suffered major damage from that same storm. One side is pretty much gone. That’s what took out the pole light. (And the wife’s car rear window) I thought that would be easy. I was aiming for a fork that was left way up on top. Here I am in my wheelchair trying to cast about 35 ft. almost straight up. Lots of little branches in the way. Hit the house a few more times, tangled up several times. Lost my egg sinkers. Hmm
What to do? No more fishing weights. Back into the junk drawer. How about an old “C” size battery, oh yeah. Heavy, nothing to snag on. Wrap that line around it, some tape to hold it securely (?). Back to the races. That baby flies! After a couple of more try’s I get it to penetrate the branches, and can reach it. It’s not exactly where I want but hey. Pull more Paracord up, pull up that Dipole. Coax hooked up, I’m a Bad Man.
Only had a few minutes to try it before the storm hit. Just pulled the coax over to the truck. Hooked into my little Cobra. Not a whole lot of improvement from my little wil. Bummer
Do I really need a $300 export radio, and a tower, and an A99 or such to talk to someone?
My CB guy says there are about 25 guys on 26.685 that talk all the time. “Down below channel one” HUH?
To be continued.
