Antenna for small car, need some pointers

th

You want pointers? Set your vehicle up like this and EVERYBODY will be pointing....:D

Don't get your hopes up very high because the Sonic is a teeny tiny car with very limited ground plane. The performance will be disappointing IMO. If you want to communicate, put the 2 meter antenna back on.
You sure did go from one extreme to another by going from a Ford Crown Vic to a Sonic. LOL

To be honest, the vic was stolen and burned to the ground. Had a HiPo engine but it's toast. So then I picked up a smart car for less than $1000, had a 102" whip on the rear, ran a Dave's made 1x4. Then sold that and picked up the Sonic because I needed room for the kids and the M35A2 was "banned" from the schools pickup line.

But the 2m action near me is dead. Same four guys talking about their diabetes and how the weather is doing. They start chatting at 6am and by 10am they are taking a nap.

I would get a HF rig, but my budget won't allow $600 rig. Plus I like 11m and how "raw" it can get

20 bucks on the roof will outperform $3000.00 on the trunk lid.

Until I enter our parking garage and take off the antenna. The antenna on the Vic would slap the concrete rafters in the parking garages where I work. 6 foot entrance clearence. Not something the admin liked seeing after they painted everything last summer.

Plus a trunk lid is easily replaced, roof not so easy.

I ended up giving the sirio to my brother in law for his pete and using the larsen nmo mount. Ordered the breedlove nmo mount for it. Got three contacts today from 12 miles-14 miles ahead/behind me today, all said it sounded good, one driver said I was the cleanest sounding radio he's heard all day.

During my lunch break I soldered in the resiator in the President Ronald radio and got it hooked up. Yeah the ground plane could be better, but we will see what my Rig Expert AA600 says in the morning. Anything on this Sonic will be better than a 102 on the smart car (fiberglass roof and plastic body panels) lol

Yeah. Crazy. It actually had pretty decent readings IIRC

Rained like a pig yesterday at work. The Larsen somehow got water in it. I noticed a yellow streak on the trunk, removed the antenna and you could shake it and hear the water inside the case. So gonna put the old puck on the trunk and run the sirio, BIL said he likes the monkey made better. Wanted to keep it clean and not run new coax, but whatever.
