Just like a gun, the best antenna is the one you have. I had an antenna mounted similar as far as a ground plane. I could drive circles in a parking lot and it was directional. Yes it worked, but there is always better. You will never have the best antenna, so run what you brung and be happy.

This is the only pic of my Toyota 4x4 that shows the Amazer atop the roll bar. I ran 4 96" pieces of braid from the antenna ground down the sides of the roll bar through the bed floor and then forward under the cab and toward the rear under the bed. Simulated radials ??? I dunno, but with a Galaxy 2100 and a TX 600 linear it was a great talker. See if you can read the license plate.
