I'm running a 1980s Antron 99 without radials. If I bought radials and put them on it would it be worth the money? Will it make that big of a difference?

What has changed if your Antron antenna is ok??? Makes no difference on what radio you buy. They all want a good antenna.. Just transmit of the frequencies you are allowed to transmit on.....

If you don't have any problems with the antenna setup, then adding the radial kit will make so little a difference you will never notice it.
There are, however, problems that said radial kit will fix, in which case you very well may notice a difference.
Even if you do have such a problem, the radial kit isn't the only way to fix said issues, just one possibility. Some of the other options are generally cheaper as well, and do just as good of a job at fixing said issues.
If the antenna is working well for you, I wouldn't bother. If you looking for a magic bullet to increase performance (gain), again, I wouldn't bother. If, however, you suspect you have a problem with your antenna setup, well, you should ask about that specifically.

wet Louisiana ground, against an old decking.
(so I can play with them "tuning rings")
but I had it on a 10-foot metal mast, with the coax at a 90 degree
angle running over to my house. the metal mast will do
what the ground radials do, and at a lower radiation angle.

The radials will make zero difference to transmit. They DO help control CMC's on the coax, which are a big problem with no-radial half wave antennas, which is what the A-99 is. If you have issues with squeal and hum from RF in the shack, then you likely have a CMC problem.
You can save yourself the coin and just attach four 108 inch wires to the grounded base of the antennas and just leave them hanging down. You are effectively creating a "coaxial sleeve" at the base of the antenna, which will cut down CMC's just as much as the radials will, and it won't cost a penny.

There you have it! A picture is worth a thousand words! Save your money by not buying the Radial Kit.
Antron 99 is very problematic antenna. I described there how to put A99 proper way. Just search through my posts.

@ kingmudduck:So I have a cobra 138xlr and the meter dose not work... It dose not key up and signal dose not work.... It is not stuck it the meter moves freely. now wires are resoldered on both ends...So now that do I look at. Could it be a diode or a transistor?
