Antron 99

HAD TO MAKE IT FIT

One thing I learned, it would not fit the trash bags whole, so cutting it up made it fit, everyone I talked to and chatted with on line said A -99's were junk, just wish I knew it before I got it.

I have one as a spare...
Even if you didn't like your A99; you could have sold it to someone for $50 if it worked. Or give it to someone that would want it.
Oh well - spilled milk.

There was something wrong with it, cant understand what tho, my neighbor has one and with a RCI 2970, he has 0 white noise, after he put the lightning ground on and the ground on the u bolt, I have a 2985 pushing a 400 watt boot, with over 4 on the s meter just white noise!

and he gets out a hell of a lot farther than I did, and the SWR was flat on mine, and his is 1.5 : 1! no great loss, it was given to me brand new like 4 years ago. they go brand new at copper for 54.00

But Like I said, I got my Maco v 58 up now and is far better than the A 99. my s meter is at 0 now and I am getting out and recieving much better.

another sad thing is I have another 99 up in the attic in the garage! that was a trade!

A 'zero' reading 'S' meter is a good thing.
'White' noise is bad, and should be completely removed.
Amazing...
I'm afraid, somewhere along the line you were misinformed, or have misinterpreted what you think you were seeing/experiencing.

you do know those 29xx radios are famous for white noise .
isnt white noise detectable with the antenna disconnected ? is it more pronounced with a antenna connected even though its generated in the radio ?
i could certianly be missunderstanding the white noise issue with the 29xx series also .

well, I have read good and bad about this antenna, I have used it for 10 meters with good results but not having a $$$ antenna to compare it to all I can say is it works and it was $50.

Anyways, I have the manual and these pages has the most info..

...Results may vary

Don`t want to stir things up with my first post here but have you seen this?
The Antron 99 exposed! by dxzone.com

Oh yeah, we've seen that link many times here.
It's no problem; as some of us have this antenna and like it.

Is it a simple antenna made of lightweight materials? Yes.
Does it perform better than higher-priced 1/2 wave antennas? Results vary from yes to no.
Do I have one and use it for 10/12/15/17 meters with an HF rig? A lot of Hams use this antenna. I use a IMAX 5/8 wave - built the SAME WAY and works flawlessly with great output and receive.
Is it worth the money and trouble? Sure, if it is set up right.
Are the db claims correct? That is subjective and conditional to installing it correctly.

Since it is 'cheap' as far as money outlayed and the materials it uses; if it works for you - then it is a bargain. There is one guy I know locally who uses it with 11 meter/CB and he gets out great. But it is in an ideal location and is 40 ft at the coax feedpoint to the ground. No one in my local group would say that it doesn't work as claimed. Quite the opposite is true.

welcome to the forum dcwuk . you wont stir up anything here . ;)
that link and the 2000 exposed are popular when ever 2Ks' and 99s' are discussed . the 2000s are obviousally better constructed but the are very similar designs and their gain claims are exaggerated . but , many folks are happy with them . for the same or similar $$ if buying new id get something all aluminium with ground planes . but those 99s and 2Ks can be had pretty cheaply used .

Thanks for the welcome, the reason I joined the thread is that I am looking at replacing my old half wave for 10/11m operation and having searched the forums came up with the Antron or Sirio 827 antennas. The 827 being more expensive and as good reviews here in the U.K. but it is a large aerial with ground planes. The Antron provokes the same results wherever i see it discussed.

i dont know where you see these results i would not even consider the two antennas similar not in gain, radiation pattern, length, price or quality!antrons are very common and popular due to marketing and false gain claims.this is like comparing apples and oranges!buy an imax 2000 for 100$ and forget about it or spend the 150 for the sirio!the antron is not worth its weigh in scrap copper if you ask me.if your looking for a cheap, decent antenna buy a workman 5/8 for 60$ (maco 5/8 knock of)and forget about it.

solarcon a99 manual

I have a copy of the a99 manual in pdf. Anyone who needs a copy of it, email me at n3ggt at yahoo dot com.

I bought one a year ago with the idea of having a vertical for 12-10 meters. The tuning is not quite broad enough to pull that off, but the VSWR is still around 2.5:1 in much of the 10m phone band. It hasn't seen much use, but with what little radio time I've had the past couple of weeks I've had fun with this antenna on 10: 100W SSB and 25W (carrier) AM, DX and stateside, feedpoint at 30', 100' LMR 400 and an MFJ tuner.

The AM contacts have me Jones'n for Heath Apache now, which is not a good thing.
