APRS via Web

I'm with Doc on this. UI-View still seems to be one of the most popular and I certainly enjoyed it. What other choices are there? I was thinking of setting up an iGate with it. What else do iGates use?

You can still use UI-View but you might want to reserve an inexpensive Win XP machine for it. If all you want to do is iGate, you can run APRSPlus: APRSa4 Download files. It's included in the downloads for APRS+SA package. Unfortunately, that software hasn't been updated in a while, either.

I think the software with the most current development is XASTIR, but that's a Linux solution.

Does anyone receive messages on their radio whether from a webgate or over RF?

I have received many messages. Perhaps there is some logic with the APRS network that won't send messages from and to yourself? Tell us your callsign (or PM us) and we can try sending you a message to see if you get it.

My dilemma is that if I send a message to myself from the vx-8r over RF (aka VFO B aprs) my vx-8r will flash the strobe light and sound the message signal. At this point I see the message I sent show up in the list and the original message showing the ACK.

If I try the webgates or have someone send me a message from their vx-8r or other aprs capable radio over rf, I never get alerted or see any message arrive.

This is why I am stumped and don't understand why I can't receive all messages.

This says that you just do not receive any APRS messages unless from yourself. Are they really received or just sent and ack that it was sent?

I remember I had to configure something on my radio as well and it opened the flood gates. I forget what it was, however...

I'm curious if you set a filter on your VX-8? Check that and try removing any filter that is present.

Might check to disable battery saver. See note on page 88 of the security encrypted, copy-protected PDF manual from Yazoo...

Also, when you send message via RF, does it show up on aprs.fi?

Well, I appreciate everyone's comments and help but I still have not resolved this issue. I checked the battery saver and it's turned off. I have no filters set and the message group is set to G1-ALL.

I believe my radio has to be on and registering on the aprs system for the messages to get to me. Even with the radio turned on and broadcasting on the aprs system, if I try to send a message from findu.com or openaprs.net to my radio, I never get it. Again, I see the packets on aprs.fi but they never reach my radio over RF. Could this be an issue with the local iGate I connect to over RF filtering this out?

If anyone wants to try to send me a message, its KB1OBG-7

Thanks

One more thing my digipath is the default Wide 1-1 Wide 2-1, do I need to add any others (aka local digipeater?) or change the above?

This might seem like a dumb question, but I gotta ask: Under APRS Menu 20 "My Callsign", what did you put in KB1OBG or KB1OBG-7?

I changed the second entry to WIDE2-2 on my radio and it helped my beacons get into the digipeater more often. That probably won't help your message receive situation, though.

My callsign is entered in the radio as KB1OBG-7. Now, someone on the Yahoo VX-8R group mentioned that removing the SSID part on the radio helped him in receiving messages, but I tried that and it didn't seem to make a difference. Either way, I'm still baffled :)

I have one more idea.

I have a short wave antenna. I attached it to the HT antenna on my VX-8R to listen to shortwave transmissions. When I flipped over to APRS I noticed that I picked up more APRS traffic. I am not brave (knowledgeable enough) to try transmitting. You could try this to see if the message is just out of reach.

LWX,
You're smart not to do that transmitting till you have some reasonable idea of what the SWR is on that antenna at 2 meters.
The only thing I'd add to your recommendation is to do that listening with a scanner, or disable the radio's ability to 'ack' message delivery (-transmitting- an acknowledgment). I got a feeling that would just be adding another stage of problems, so just think about it.
- 'Doc

PS - If you use that 'Wide 2-2', you don't need the 'Wide 1-1', redundant. Then again, it won't hurt, so leave it alone.

Good news! For some reason last night, 3 out of 5 messages I sent to myself from openaprs.net popped up on the radio. I didn't change anything, but I did let my radio sit for about 3 hours automatically sending beacons before I tried sending messages. Not sure why 2 didn't make it, but it evidently works. Also, I sent test messages from findu.com but they never showed up... hmmm.

I think if your radio misses a bit you miss the message. Is the reception good?

In my area some APRS stations would jump on top of another every once in a while.

But it's good at least that the system worked!

SO if I send a message via send message someone had a few posts ago, where do I look to see if it came out<msg to myself>....

Look on your APRS radio? Or Openaprs.net will show you in the "messages" list.
