#16 In a Series: Antenna Restoration
After approximately 40k miles out in the wind on a 2012 Kenworth
T-660 in 2015 (Galaxy 979 & DSP speaker), this pair recently resuscitated after a long convalescence in the Museums Lee DeForest Annex.
Museum technicians meticulously applied:
1). MOJO
Metal Polish & Sealant
(Roadworks)
— Wipe one direction only until cloth blackened. Remove haze after 15’. Polish with new clean cloth.
Followed by (3) applications of
2). REJEX
Polymer Sealant
(US Corrosion Tech)
— Each coat cures in 8-12/hours. Applied 24-hrs apart. Just buff light haze away.
With the finishing touch of anti-static corona balls affixed to the non-standard whips.
Asked in another thread (“Quick! ID them”) with no takers,
these are a pair of:
ProComm Quad Wrap
(QW-45B)
(below from original packaging)
4.5’ tall
Mil-spec chrome over hardened brass
Mil-spec polyolefin covering
High dB gain, extreme bandwidth
Broadband 26-30 MHz
Top heavy, top loaded.
HD stud required.
Them shiny balls add something, don’t they?
I’ll be headed from FTW to Gary, IN tomorrow on a two day drive. Have one of these mounted on the ultra shiny
Starship Launcher triple mag mount to go atop a rental SUV. Grey. Non-descript. (Not no more with highly polished mount underneath).
The two clean/restore/protect products mentioned above are as much the reason for this as the shinin’ ball of fire. Awesome, fast, and long-term protection. (Survives layers of bugs AND Blue Beacon truck wash). Those corona balls looked nothing like this when received.
So, how will it tune with or without? A Uniden 980 at other end.
No difference? But, you have to admit its fun. Cheap.
I’ll bet I get some inquiries over the 996-mile drive Sat & Sun.
Perk up the long drive. Anyone en route?
(DFW across the top then via IH30 & 40 to Memphis,
then north on IH55 past STL and a jog over to IH57).
Not a low-drag antenna. This doesn’t help . . . but it’s a rent car.
Triple Mag Slide Test.
