I'm looking to get walkie-talkies for my family. I have heard a lot of great things about BaoFengs, and a lot of bad things. Some say the UV-5R is great, but the FCC seems not to like them and I don't really understand them. It seems like they're just portable HAM radios that people are using illegally as walkie-talkies, but maybe I'm confused.
I've heard them described as CB radios, but then I've read they can't be used as CB radios at all. They can't use FRS, and you're supposed to get a license to use GMRS. But then I've read you can use them as MURS walkie-talkes, legally and without a license.
If MURS is a good option for walkie talkies, and UV-5Rs work for this purpose, then they might be a good option. As an added bonus, you can listen to HAM on them, and even transmit if you have a license.
What I really want is a walkie-talkie that can also be used as a 2-way CB radio. That seems more useful than a handheld HAM, but maybe you can tell me otherwise.

If you haven't purchased radi's yet check out the Wouxun KG-805G gmrs radio or the KG-805M murs radio. Gmrs need a license, and 4 watt's handheld or up to 50 watts mobile/ base unit. I believe murs is limited to 2 watts across the board. I have a set of the KG-805g's and reallly like them.I'm looking to get walkie-talkies for my family. Yes it is but you can use an external antennasbelieve Murs is limited to 2 watts across the board.
Taken as a whole, FCC rules can be summed up as follows:“Technical Difficulties” doesn’t suffice as a bar. Harm is relative, not absolute.
John Whitehead and other authors do a fine job of portraying that the average American can’t get through a day without being in multiple violation of laws or rules by agencies.
Congress CANNOT delegate the power of law to agencies (rule-making) via unelected officials not subject to recall by the People.
“Show us the transcript of the debate on the House floor.”
Better, my pocket copy of the Unabridged United States Constitution doesn’t provide for such.
Those “rules” haven’t the weight of air.
Does one suppose that it’s the violation which matters, not at all the purported substance?
It’s just words. Who cares?
That’d be the taxpayer-parasites. The grifters in uniform. Use a badge and a gun for the guarantee of three-hots-and-a-cot. As it’s also career-building. Amoral.
A mighty sad state of affairs.
But all of them have been furloughed without pay for the duration given that any authority has never been anything but a grey area. Right?
1). The tech is there.
2). The need for use is obvious.
(Not desire. NEED)
3). The process of rule-making is established (despite being extra-Constitutional).
4). The abandonment of responsibility isn’t on citizens (with God-given rights).
5). The power to authorize appears (is effectively) abandoned. While penalties still exist.
Ergo, ruination of amateur radio is a desirable outcome.

I have been looking at them, I would have to figure out how to program them and what frequencies to program them for.I have 2 UV 5R+ / I say AMAZING. For what they'll do vs. cost ..... Gebus, a real no-brainer.
