mb91w126,
First, decide if you want to enter the 'CB' radio thingy or the 'Ham' radio thingy. There's a world of difference. I don't care which you want to do, do which ever you want.
The difference in brands and models is 'large'. About like Fords/Chevys and whatever. It's a preference thingy mostly.
In general, the CB hobby hasn't changes appreciably in 20 or more years. Do your own comparisons, see for your self. That's about equipment, not style, or operating techniques. Some particular models seem to be 'better' than others. That's another one of those 'reference' thingys. The same thing goes for ham equipment, but maybe in a little more variety, sort of.
Mixing ham gear with CB radio is not exactly the best idea in the world, there are consequences that aren't real 'fun'. That's in both directions, not just one!
Most hams started out with CB radio (whether they say so or not!). Oh well, big deal.
Decide what you are interested in doing and then go for it.
