Best antenna location on welding truck?

It seems that my initial assumption that a 1/4 wave would lose any advantage because it would be mounted down low is correct

That's pretty much it. Look at this way, you won't gain much advantage either for the extra work involved to change antennas.

I believe you did your antenna mount correctly and will work as good as you would hope for.

The only exception would be if that is a mag mount because It's hard to tell in your pic. If so, you could improve the antenna bonding and other negative effects associated with mag -mounts and use a permanent trunk mount. I know drilling a whole doesn't sit well with many folks, but a mag mount should only be used as a temporary antenna.

I just have a cheap stud mount right now, but I was planning to install a puck so I can run my bigger antennas without ripping the roof open. I really just asked the location question to make sure there wasn't something major I was missing.

Puck mount will be perfect, your location is ideal, you're good to go!

Looks like you are good as far as antenna location is. How high is your roof? And what antenna are you now planning to use? With the height of that truck a base coil antenna like a sirio performer 5000 would work well. And the breedlove pucks are top notch. I've not personally seen a funny puck but I know the breedlove pucks and mounts are well built. And if you don't like the sirio maybe check out a predator 10k or similar. Seems like you you already got it figured out. Throw up some pics when you get the new antenna.
