WTF_trace.jpeg

Not only was the calibration off a bit but the same cell phone camera with cataracts.
The yellow trace (VSWR) has two noticeable dips in that 50KHz to 60MHz span.
7.244 MHz and 52.4 MHz.

...missed it by that much.

My last arc was between two inductors made of 3/8 tubing. It jumped through about a half inch of plexiglass and left some nice soot splatter on the inductors. I asked the wife if she wanted to look out for fireworks while I fired up the transmitter. She didn't and really missed a good show. My spark gap transmitter was on 3885 and could be heard on the 2m rig.:ROFLMAO:

Any reason why 3885 ?

Yeah. I built a new tuner for 75m and 160. I was giving it a good stress test and it failed after 30 seconds. That's ok. The original caught on fire before I got the bugs worked out.

It's link coupled but in series to feed a short antenna. The coil is split in the center and I didn't have the halves far enough apart. Apparently there's a large voltage difference between them.

What's the plan for the balun?

All because I can't seem to design, construct, build, follow directions, get the right materials, in order to have a 4:1 current balun.
Mod_0 : 7.244MHz & 52.40MHz with a 2.5:1 "saddle" between 14 & 28.5 MHz.
Result: arced, and well, not even close. Vinyl is not an insulator, it's a covering or coating.
20160618_215212.jpg

burn_1.jpeg

Mod_1 : more of the same w/o the arcing.
RBWG.jpeg

Result: try again

Mod_2 : 14ga magnet wire and 4mm OD x 2mm ID teflon sheath. Same design.
Result: A biotch to wind and useful at 7.290MHz an not within 40:1 vswr anywhere.
14ga_overkill.jpeg

Without the Drake MN2700B I wouldn't have HF at all. However can you imagine the return loss @ 3.825 across 150' of 9913? I don't have to :-/

Mod_3 : The above materials on verified "K" (52) 2.4" cores with (for the moment) the same design.

Right now her 33' vertical works better.

Here is the best video I found to construct and test a 4:1 balun. The video says 800W, but I'm sure larger cores could be utilized for more power.

The TRX Bench channel also has 2 videos on building and testing a standard 1:1 balun. Videos #100 & #101.

And part 4 was the construction and testing of a 9:1 balun.

Tons of good info in those 4 videos. They're pretty long winded, but worth the watch.

I found it easier to just buy more of what I misplaced somewhere on my bench. Eventually an accumulations saturation point is reached, and the items I’m looking for are visibly laying on the floor.

It's when National Geographic shows up and wants to "Excavate" your bench for Research purposes...

The "Muffin Tin" in the shot reminded me of the times I used something similar to help with projects including making molds for spacers for some of the automotive projects I worked on.
