best recieving 10 meter radio

I expanded my G90 today. I also updated firmware to version 1.7. Everything is working just fine. Fun little radio.

I know you just got it, but what are your first impressions on the effectiveness of the noise blank circuit, microphone (the photo on Amazon has the mic looking half-way decent), and VFO tuning smoothness (or lack of). TIA.

After upgrading to 1.7, I noticed no real change to the NB. It does work on ignition pulse. It works on some of my PLN. You have to play with the width and level. It can easily distort the signal if you adjust them high. While the NB needs work, it's no different than other rigs.

The VFO turns easily, although it has around 10 detents, it IS easy to turn. I've seen where other users have replace the dial with other knobs, mostly from audio gear, they look goofy. I have no problem with the stock knob. Tuning steps are quickly and easily selectable for fast band excursions. I've seen they are working on an external touch screen for complete rig control, but I wouldn't buy it.

Only real gripe I have, is with the buttons. Some are fussy. If you have fat fingers with no nails, it can be a challenge to activate them. Version 1.7has a known bug, which they are aware of and working on. When the rig is receiving a strong signal, the rig won't shut off with the power button. You can d/c the antenna, remove DC lead or power off the supply. I've encountered it a few times. No big deal as it'll be fixed.

I joined a couple Facebook groups. There's little doubt that the engineers are receptive to improvements in this rig. I imagine we'll be seeing lots more features in this rig and rollouts of other cool stuff. I haven't read what the tuner specs are, but this dude loads up my 80 m trapped dipole lickity split. No other high priced portable comes close.

I seen where they have released a stand that has powerpole inputs, built in fan and front tilt feet. The radio slides into it and a latch secures everything tight. It'll be interesting to how this rig evolves. I'd like to see them build a desktop rig.

From ZL2 last night with the G90 on 40m, Portable, LiPO battery, a resonant 40m inverted V, Just the radio; I was able to work stations in Europe. Holland. Germany. Chek republic, portugal
as well as australia, Fiji, and Vanuatu. I heard stations in the US. UK and Guatemala! The band was good. The receiver is a little noisy as no dnr but the signals are perfectly copyable. I have not been able to sort the NB so dont use it. I kept the attenuattor on the whole time. Did not need to use the tuner. Stations seem to pick up the portable suffix and respond to that call first. That and QRP. On 40m I think 20w almost counts as QRP. Bottom line is that this thing works! Just the buttons...remember..just a touch. Off button with ver 1.7? Just hold it in till radio turns off. It will eventually. DX reports the audio a little bassy. Bob Nagy has already come to the rescue I believe!
This radio is fun. Pick the location and the world is at your fingertips.

Turning the rig off with version 1.7 is a known issue. It's only happened a few times. Doesn't matter how long I hold it, it won't shut off. Easy work around until they fix it. The NB seems opposite of other rigs. You have to set the level to 8 or 9 before it engages. It acted like an attenuator when I turned it on. The default levels are zero, but won't work until you adjust it way higher. Couldn't figure why until I read about it. Most rigs, you can operate the NB at the lowest levels. On this, u can't. It's weird, but it seems more like a "noise gate". It does take out my ignition noise on my 2001 Cherokee.

I'm slowly gathering up stuff to take it out camping.

Compared to the 857, better, worse the same?

Jeff

In some ways, the G90 is probably better with pulse type. To me, it works better on ignition noise than my 857. My 857 was/is a big disappointment for me in the mobile. When it was in there, I just left it off, since it really didn't do anything. It seems the G90 has potential, although it will distort the signal easily if not adjusted right. There is chatter about the NB in the groups I'm in. Hopefully, they keep playing with it. Of course, if it needs a hardware fix, I'm SOL.

So, basically it's better than the 857, but not much. Presently, I just leave it off.

Thanks for the info - good to know!

Best 10 meter radio today on the listening side? Not sure, the Connex Saturn base was the best receive on SSB I've ever heard

A small but powerful 10 meter transceiver, this is one of the slimmest radios on this list. STRYKER 8541724197 10 Meter is a great option for tight spaces, such as small cars and trucks.

I just got a G90 with all the kit they make for it for less than a Stryker 955!!!

Since I am getting my ticket punched I wanted a real amateur radio on a budget. I own plenty of CB/10M/11/12 radio's and none of them will do what the G90 will do.

Really what it comes down to is do you want a real amateur radio or do you want a radio to "free band" on.

I find is normaly the case on most internet forums is that people asking questions do not want honest advice. What they really want is a group hug and approval in advance for the decision they have already made or purchase they have already made. Most of all they are almost never honest about what they really want or any limitations on the decision they have already made.

In the case of Stryker 955, President Lincoln II +XXXX, Anytone XXXX they all use massively similar board made by the same company in Chine. THe biggest differences beside external appearance is key features, power output and user interface. You might as well be trying to decide between white chicken eggs, brown chicken eggs and green chicken eggs!

Do you need dual vco's to work offset, do you need DTMF, do you need tone squelch, do you need good CW,AM and LSB operation? Do you want waterfall? What about FM? Do you need digital modes of operation? Do you need to operate an FCC compliant device or are you not in the USA? Any limits of operation in the country you live in if not the USA?

"Do I want biscuits and gravy or gravy and biscuits?" ......."Should I get biscuits and gravy from Hardy's or Grandma?" ???????

Nothing wrong with those radio's for a certain customer demographic but those are not 10m radio's or HF rigs. They are over glorified CB's. You can get a real HF radio for less than the gimp lame pimped out Stryker 955. The Stryker 955 is a pimped out powerful CB.

These threads always have replies from someone who feels they are superior based on the band and equipment they choose. 10m is 10m. I get great reports on both 11m and 10m with my barefoot stock trailer trash Stryker 955. And it only cost me $200. Go figure.
Yep, I agree but it's not worth the battle of who has the bigger schlong..... I just leave it be and enjoy my "Glorified CB"! It works plenty well for me.

Hi all,
FWIW, I have many radios to compare here, and to my ear, the Anytone AT-5555NII RX audio with it's excellent RXNR is as nice to listen too as my Yaesu FTDX10, and Kenwood TS-990s. In fact, I like it more! It is that good! (The Stryker 955V2 has the same PCB and will perform in a similar way). This latest generation of 10m radios has changed the game.
