I traded an older Cobra 29 ltd classic and a 4' Wilson silverload whip and mirror mount / coax to a truck driver friend for a Black cat 500 amplifier. He says he ordered it from H & Y electronics and I did find it on their site but have no opinions on it from anyone other than my friend who can't use it due to company rules. I hooked it to my 148gtl and a 102" whip and using a Dosy 4001 meter (all I have) on AM I'm seeing about 230-240 watts on high and on SSB I'm seeing a little over 400 watts. My 148 dead keys 2 watts on AM. Does anyone have any experience with one of these?

I've typed out the model number under search on their website and the product will show up that way. it has to be exact though. Example kl503 won't show up but kl-503 will. At least the last time I visited there it worked that way. Should work that way on other amps I would think. They are just hidden a little bit seek and find.

You can learn more about this amp here http://www.worldwidedx.com/general-cb-services-discussion/150537-black-cat-amp.html and you can see it for sale at H&Y here NEW 500W MOBILE TRANSMITTER-H&Y Electronics H&Y is now hiding their CB linears. Unless you have the specific link to the page you cannot find them from their homepage but you can see they are still for sale.

I've been able to find them in the past when doing a search. They were hidden, but not hidden as well as they are now. Thanks for the tip!

On edit, that amp sure looks like a Midnight Special in different paint/trim.

73,
Brett

The amp on the H&Y site looks like it was made in someones kitchen. the labeling is done with a old label maker and crooked. I guess if they work that's all that matters.

Yes Ratso it's an ugly amp and I have taken the cover off and I'm not impressed and was told my SSB sounds muffled. It's going to the shop this evening and maybe trade for something else. My opinion so far:thumbdown:

Several years ago I tested a MF200 (mosfet not Magna Force) from X-Force. The amp was a real pooch and was not very impressive.

Ouch!! I have alot of stuff here radios amplifiers ETC I was thinking about letting one of my Texas Star DX500 go to try one of these Black Cat mosfet amplifiers to run with one of my Hi power HF rigs as they claim the Black Cat it good for 125 watts in on SSB so I figured 60 to 75 watts in would get me 450 out but maybe not Im thinking. I just was entrigued by it being able to handle an HF rig on SSB input.

The other question is what the heck the frequency range capabilities is on those Black Cat mosfets?? I find no info I thought the amp being smaller in physical size would have been a great match for my Yaesu 857D or Kenwood TS-50 for portable use.

My dad had a black cat amp back in the late seventies. Are the new black cats the same company? I was just a kid at the time but I do remember that amp. JB 75 modulator? Does that sound right? I'm going on the memory of a 12 year old kid so I'm most likely wrong on the model number but it sounds right..

i thought dymo tape died in the 70's.
somebody post a pic of the insides yet?
i suspect its cheap crap since that is what the cb market demands.
