I never put much faith in what the Navy claimed, but then again, if you are a ship, out in the middle of the ocean, there is nothing to absorb the RF or block the RF at night. Skywave vs Groundwave. If you are thousands of feet up in the air, it doesn't take much of an antenna to talk / receive 100 miles either. The UHF / VHF antenna used on a Tomcat looked a lot like a fin, and the transceiver produced 150 watts - AM / FM; just think how cool it would have been if it also had SSB!
