Browning eagle mark 3

Got one gave to me a few weeks ago at a ham fest.

Got it up and running, aligned it as per instructions from CB tricks site. ( great site).

I have the PAL model 90-3 vfo and have it wired into the TR.

Need any info on broad banding the receiver.

Also any type of mods for this old tuber.

I do know about strapping the bias resistor on the tube final, I removed that when I put the rig back to factory specs. Not looking for any power mods, just any improvements on both TR and RX.

as far as receiving i concern this radio has one of the best receivers that i have ever came across as far as cb radio is concern. this bird is old and you might have to send it to barket electronics. hope i got the name correct. anyway my mark 3 is about 3 watts dead key swings to about 15 watts with the stock desk mic it has loud clear audio the pinger is out of this world with a x-force 40 amp. it dead keys about 40 watts swings to 100 watts into my alpha 86 (not use all the time) this set up would give me about 700 watts dead key and swings to 1700 audio watts with out breaking a sweat. by the way when the pinger comes on it does 2200 watts. with my siltronix vfo i go up to channel 85 and 3 channels below one. sorry i can't help you with your original question but im just giving you some idea what this combo could do once is set up right. once you get this bird tune correct and 100% don't let it go cause not all birds are created equal. good luck and enjoy that classic toy.

I have the siltronix model 90-3 external vfo.

The frequencies sound correct as for band spread.

How did you broadband the transmitter to transmit on that much of a band spread? The original design is 23 channel.

The receiver is separate and the model 90-3 vfo only connects to the transmitter.
you have all the frequencies in the transmit side but how did you get the receiver to broadband enough to receive that many frequencies.

Just curious as the only info I have is the factory service manual from CB tricks.

The one I have keys around 3 watts and swings to 10 watts an an Autek true PEP reading wattmeter.

The Browning Eagles were the cream of the crop of 11 meter radios along with the Tram d201. They are, as I have said here before, Ham radios in deguise.

Having a lot of fun with that old bird.

Ordered and installed the 40 ch receive kit.

Works great but the vfo dial does not exactly align with the channel indicated but it is close enough.

I aligned it at ch 1 and by time you get to ch 12 the vfo dial displays ch15.

Sensitive receiver and the transmitter is great also. Of course it is a Browning.

The rest is cosmetics. Just received the Browning Eagle in the mail today thanks to another forum member. Thanks Fixer.

I will attach the speaker cover, the speaker grill and the eagle and that will complete the old Browning.

I am using a Shure 450 mic. My Shure 444D is wired for the Swan 700CX, and the Other Shure 444D is on the Yaesu FT 890.

Probably not. The label on the rear tells you what the factory put into it. No telling what mods may have been done to convert it to a different radio.

Shows that all the PAL versions close enough for a Mark 3 SSB transmitter begin with the letter "B". Pretty sure the crystal in the one you need would be 11.25 MHz, more or less.

The "C" versions cover various 23 MHz crystals used in some Cybernet-made and other 23-channel radios.

Converting a PAL involves more than just changing the crystal.

The crystal is marked (6.7000 mc ) what does that mean ? I have know ideal .the vfo is marked on the back ( C 3 )

I know this is a very old post, but what was the kit in the end? How was the expansion done and was your radio the early or later version of the MKIII? The early version has a switch on the receiver that reads MAN-XTAL1-XTAL2. I am trying to expand mine and it is rather frustrating when a thread is resolved with no detail of how for future radio enthusiasts. Just saying.

Barkett sells the receiver kit. Includes a new tuning dial, the "HF" crystal the later receiver already contained, and a so-called "banjo" washer. It mounts over the bushing of the band switch, between it and the front panel. Provides the ground connection for the band crystals.

It's about 2/3 the way down the page.

The tricky part is removing the original 31.4 crystal and moving it to mount on the rear of the band switch alongside the new 31.72 HF crystal. Some of the time, one wire lead will break off the crystal when it's being moved. Can't just run one additional long wire to the crystal from where it's mounted to the V3 socket. It needs to get moved.

Never have seen what kind of directions come with the kit. Always just bought the crystal alone to do this.

And expanding the transmitter pretty much means adding a VFO. All other solutions I have seen just don't measure up.

Hey flattop, I cant remember what version I had been a few years,, Think I ended up putting VFO on it ( transmitter) and using it that way so I could read freq of the VFO and didn't use the dial on the old bird any more.

Thanks fellas. I already ordered the receiver kit. I worry about how difficult it may be to tune, the sensitivity.
I am also going to order an Arduino type VFO for the transmitter. Both of these out of the US of course. I'm helping with your economy, we're doing alright down here.
