I'm new to the forum, been into radios for 20 years, had a 5 year break or so do to moving. I have a Galaxy DX 2517, a Aries HP-5000 wattmeter, boomer 600 mobile amp-running off of a Pyramid 52KX power supply. I'm looking for a good Ground Plane antenna Under $200.00, I used to have a A-99, was thinking about buying a MACO-V5/8. Just wanted opinions on that antenna or any others in that price range(Imax, sirio, etc). I was also thinking about buying a used Texas Star Sweet Sixteen amp, can I hook up two Pyramid 52KX Power supplys in Parallel to run a amp? I dont know anything about the Aries watt meter I picked up, any opinions on that would be appreciated. Sorry for so many questions, the 11 meter bug has bitten me again, and this seems like a awesome forum! Thanks In Advance.

A Maco would be fine. So would the Sirio or the Imax. I think that most 5/8 wave antennas are fine. For that price, you should be able to buy any one of those including the shipping.

The Boomer amp should work on any of those antennas. But the power supply will be on the edge of its limits with that Boomer. No way can you run the Sweet 16 on that power supply - IMO. If you can't get out with 500+ watts; you can't get out...
Might consider a beam antenna before you buy...

Thanks for the reply, I have a 4 element Quad and a moonraker 4, but i'm just renting the house, and my rotor got fried by lightning, so its too much hassle to put those up. Could I run 2 or 3 of those power supplys in parrallel to get more amperage, for a bigger amp? Thanks Again.

I'm looking for a good Ground Plane antenna Under $200.00,

The Interceptor 10K is only a bit more than $200 and will last you a lifetime, not like some of the others. I would buy that first before you buy big amps...especially if you plan on buying big amps later.

Not sure about the power supplies but the maco v5/8 is a great choise. Can't go wrong with one of them. I have had one for about a year and it beats the A99 hands down.

ok, first the facts.

you can run two power supplies in parallel, but its not as simple as just running a wire from the amp to both power supplies.
there is a bit more to it, involving adding some diodes, etc...
this question has been asked on many ham/cb forums and shouldnt be too hard to find.

to increase your signal by 1 S-unit on someone else's receiver, you have to increase your output power by 4x.
that means that if your amp puts out 500 watts, and someone is receiving you with an S-5; you would have to put out 2000 watts to increase it to an S-6.

keep this in mind when you are considering how much money you want to spend on a new amp, and all that goes with it. (increased TVI!)

now for the opinions.

the maco v5/8 is a very good antenna and you will be happy with it.
the imax is also good, but be sure to get the ground plane kit with it.

the aries meter is as good as any other wattmeter in its price range.

yes, this is an awesome forum!

good luck with your setup,
LC
