Dig this DX Hounds:
10:30Z...6:30EDST...While chatting with the normal group on 3.865, this station ID-ed in CW
WA3NAN/ISS...who? I replied!
He sent again WA3NAN/ISS...
Good Morning WA3NAN BUT WHAT IS THE ISS? I replied....
response: NAISS...
I said: International Space Station?...
response: YES YES THX 4 CALL....
I replied: The ISS is now on lowbands?...
response: YES passing over Alaska com4 Air Force name is Bill...

Ok here's the scope of this best I can figure:
I am in Indiana talking to the ISS receiver(who's orbit is over South America)and Sat Linked to Air Force COM4 over Alaska! HOLY ****!
Then COM4 is transmitting back(via Sat link) through the ISS beacon transmitter on ISS...and being received over much of the Midwest...
again HOLY ****!

I asked about the weather(LOL)....Bill's reply: BRRR Sunny LOL...
Well what do you think of that?.... Amatuer Radio....You just never know who your next contact might be!

This makes the Space Shuttles Columbia, Endeavor, The Muir Space Station and now ISS....All in my logs...cool:w00t:
Now that's a "GATE" worth talking about!

You do know that the callsign WA3NAN is assigned to the Goddard Amateur Radio Club in Greenbelt, Maryland don't you?

Please explain again how you think it happened. First you said "I am in Indiana talking to the ISS receiver(who's orbit is over South America)and Sat Linked to Air Force COM4 over Alaska!" That means that your 80m signal was passing thru the ionosphere and being rx'ed by the ISS over South America, but then you said "Then COM4 is transmitting back(via Sat link) through the ISS beacon transmitter on ISS...and being received over much of the Midwest...
again" which means that you would have to have been listening to the beacon frequency on VHF which never has any communications on it other than a beacon or data stream.

I am both confused and intrigued.

Frank Bauer, KA3HDO, and Mark Steiner, K3MS, at the Goddard Space Flight Center’s WA3NAN. Each of these Earth stations has a track record of being able to sustain reliable communication with the ISS.

Here is a little historical trivia of a UFO sighting WA3NAN broadcast of Space Shuttle Discovery-
Shuttle Discovery - Mission 20

Here is an audio shuttle.zip (.wav) (88K) and text of the conversation.
The voices of the astronaut and of the amateur radio station WA3NAN Goddard in the Space Center of Greenbelt Maryland. WA3NAN: We are retransmitting the Space Shuttle airground communication from mission 20. This is WA3NAN. Astronaut James F. Buchli... Astronaut: Houston, this is Discovery, we still have the alien spacecraft under observance...

There is no one named Bill on the ISS currently.

I'm checking into this also!

CK: I like you find this interesting. Yes I am aware of where this callsign is listed.
I have a email to the trustee of that call going out today.
The ISS system may possibly have the ability to be used as a repeater.
The operator using that callsign stated he was over Alaska at the time of this contact. I checked the orbit of ISS and it was passing over S. America.
Bill(operator) also stated that he was linked "using the beacon transmitter at 25 miles above you". " I am telelinked via Com4 Air Force over Alaska"

There were several other operators that heard these transmissions. The way signals were received it appeared legit. I myself questioned him. The contact lasted almost 10 minutes. I did omit some text that I copied(and others listening)
So I am like all of you waiting to see if I can get this confirmed. I have sent the trustee a request for confirmation and time willing today will email him directly about the specific details of what I and others copied.
I hate to think some unknown was "Bootlegging" that callsign...they may have done something they may regret.
Keep you'al posted if I hear anything back!

It would be quite a thing if it was indeed a valid contact.

I have a question however, what is "COM4"? Is it Comsat-4 satellite or an airborne telecom station inflight over Alaska?

Browsing and this caught my eye...

NASA - Expedition 12

This is the only crew member I can find on the Nasa page that has been on the ISS in the last few years.

"Commander Bill McArthur
McArthur is a NASA astronaut and the commander for Expedition 12. He last visited the station in October of 2000 during shuttle mission STS-92."
