CB Tricks

Hey Sonoma, thanks for the note. I'm doing well. I didn't know about your wife. Sorry to hear that.

Yeah, sometimes when you're fixing up your own radio for fun it's relaxing. Other times....arg. I do keep the guys at cbt busy sometimes. Normally, it's because a Galaxy came it with some strange problem. I don't take on repairs unless the radio came from me so I don't really do much repairing. I spend most of my time customizing new radios. But, when I do, cbtricks is still the best.

I'm in the same boat as Sonoma. I have been buying a lot of radios to fix, but really had no use for them ... until now. Where I live there has been NO cb, but lately it's picking up like crazy (see other thread). Most of the rigs I had have been given away or sold (the better ones) to folks who want to get in on the action. Now, I can't get enough radios, especially base stations. Most of the stuff I buy is pretty much junk, but it is cheap and that is the most important thing to me. The people here don't have a lot of dinero, so I try to get them a rig as cheaply as possible. I need a lot of help fixing the radios I buy, and I look to the forums on the 'net for help.

I've been a member here for quite a while and enjoyed it because of the the tech expertise. But lately, it's kinda gotten stale. I hate to say it, but now there is another forum that is head over heels better tech-wise. I think this is because many of the members here that were strong technically have been chased away. Unfortunate, but true. Now, to me, WWDX has become just another mediocre cb forum. I think if the admins REALLY look at things here they will understand why.

Hank, I share your frustration. After literally thousands of hours of work putting together the CB Tricks main site, the owner's life got busy.

Won't elaborate, but he's on the job as sysadmin, keeping the script kiddies from screwing it up. I know this for a fact because my company site is on the same server. Now and again there is a brute-force attack on the site and he'll take it completely down and wait for them to go and play elsewhere. Seems that would-be web site burglars have a short attention span.

But as for updates, it's not a priority at the moment. The site is the owner's private project, and AFAIK nobody else has any admin access to the site or its content. He took down the contributions link when he saw that new updates would not be coming along. Felt it wasn't fair to accept funds if the content isn't being expanded.

As for the forum on that site, consider how many spammers you find posting on this forum. None that I have seen. I can tell you that this is the result of someone patrolling the new signups for spammers and deleting them before they can log in. Not sure how many person-hours a week it takes to keep up with that on this forum. It takes more hours than Bennie has available for the CBT forum, so new signups get turned on only for a brief period on rare occasions. As soon as it's made available again, literally hundreds of spammers try to sign up. I was briefly authorized to approve new members a few years ago, and the sheer massive volume of spammer signups was a revelation to me. The proportion of spam signups to legitimate signups was really, really high.

I got fooled and let a few of them through. Kinda laborious to go through and delete all the SPAM posts after that member gets banned.

But it's ultimately a labor issue. Good help is hard to find, and free help is seldom good help.

It's a shame people can't leave well enough alone, our Texas based photog forum got knocked out by an attack and by the time it was restored it never recovered. I would understand if the guy didn't want to bother anymore, seems it's a lot of work to run a forum and we are very blessed to have this one. Thank you for your input Sir.

I have been a member of cbtricks for a very long time, I can understand the frustration of dealing with day to day operations of a online forum, been there, done that....all the way back when we had to monitor this forum that was hosted on EZBoards and we were attacked by Tommy two watt, magmount, Chris, cherry popper, and the likes of Mack Mobile and the rest of the short bus cb retards. We had some one on the forum live 24 hours a day 8 days a week staying ahead of DOS attacks, porn posting and spammers.
We had to individually approve each new member, one at a time after researching user names, IP address`s, Emails and then monitor each new post on the board.
It is not an easy task keeping troublemakers out of the system.
Add to that the hard work Bennie has done researching, and cataloging the largest collection of CB radio and cb related info on line to date, used by people all over the world.
Then only to find individuals that copy his work, and sell it for profit on fleabay and other auction sites.
I admire Bennie for what he has accomplished and that the database and forum are even still alive today, many would have just thrown in the towel long ago......

Bbi the world's amp builder in Idaho is intrested in getting ahold of the person who owns cb tricks , if some one could get him in contact with the owner that would be awsome he interested in getting it up and running for any one . Your friend double r
If you do a little digging, there was one or more folks here that actually talked to Bennie within the last few years and it didn't get very far for whatever reason. The attempt has been made various times and there are members here who labored heavily in all of cbt who I personally believe better deserve to have the reigns of cbt if that were to ever happen. These men were the pioneers in cbt when I joined that forum around 2006, worked relentlessly to administrate it, purge it when necessary, shared their knowledge to us younger bucks, and stayed with it to the day it became floating duck. The attempt has been made by the OG's more than once and it's been a dead end every time.

I have an older complete set of CBTricks supporter discs. I have withheld publishing them out of respect for Bennie, but since the site is now defunct, I guess it's time to start creating an accessible archive here. This is going to take some work...
