Checking swr on a radio, would power lines affect it?

I'd hate to have to have you do that.

Since it's a mag mount - set it up like you did on the other vehicles.

Only try to keep the whip in the base in a same tuning spot you had for them, your other vehicles.

But, just for verification - try it on the roof - if the SWR is 1.5 or lower that's all I needed to know - for the issue would be due to lack of a way the RF energy can generate the counterpoise image from the RF propagating away from the whip at that spot You Want To Put The Antenna. Think of it - like a tuned string - pluck it in the wrong spot it will still "vibrate" but it takes a lot more energy to strum the string to vibrate - than it would take to strum the string where the easier and less effort it takes to accomplish that same task - try thinking of it that way when you try to find a good spot on that vehicle

It has been my philosophy to say "Just because the antenna looks cool at that spot, doesn't mean you will get the best performance from that Hi-Po miracle of an antenna - at that spot on the vehicle. You need to provide the best location to obtain that expected level of performance. .You achieve that by looking out for, and utilizing where, to determine how well the antenna will resonate at specific locations - and that is to use your SWR meter to help determine the best locations by finding locations on the vehicle that provide the lowest SWR for that antenna UNTUNED - as in just put it together correctly but not set.

How does that work? Well I explain it this way...if the antenna is given a good location - it's going to resonate over a greater range of bandwidth - which equates to a lower SWR from the start of your whole install process...which is where the antennas' performance will be determined by the location and how well you can make the install work from that location.

I work ham radio from my truck and open doors do affect the readings.

Anything that is on a sliding hinge type contact will affect the receiver. I haven't noticed a vswr change due to open/closed doors, but I never checked either.

All my trunk/door hinges have a bonding strap across them. the biggest and most important things to bond are the horizontal items,.. hoods, exhaust systems, ect.

None of the truck has been bonded. I tuned the antennas using my ancient MFJ antenna analyzer and it is all good as long as the doors are closed. When I'm hill topping the doors are closed and locked with the AC running. I also have one of my pistols at the ready.
I had one clown come up to me saying he was going to confiscate all of my radio gear.
I told him to go away or he was going to get hurt badly. He was not a cop or any other form of law enforcement, When I asked to see his badge/credentials he said, "I don't need any, I'm making a citizen's arrest." The dummy did not even live in the area.
I showed him my pistol and told him I'm calling 911. The police showed up and took him away and charged him with Intimidation with intent to commit robbery.
The idiot told the police I had a gun, they replied we know. When he called 911 he informed the operator he was licensed and had a weapon with him. I did not pull the gun until he grabbed my antenna, by Kentucky law I could have shot him at that moment.
What the hell is wrong with people these days.

543 Dallas, I am putting my Wilson 1000 mag mount back on the trunk lip of my car, and in the driveway where I am trying to tune my antenna to get the best swr for my radio I have residential power lines going overhead. I can't seem to get my swr below 2.0 on 1 and 40, I am guess I am wondering would trying too tune a antenna by powerlines, could it affect me trying too tune it properly, I have a brand new 62 inch whip in it and the coax is brand new also, I had the same antenna on a different car in the same spot and I was able to drop the whip in and got a 1.0 to 1.5 before. I am thinking i may have to trim a little off,but i was just wondering if residential power lines could affect tuning a cb antenna, hope the info helps!! Thanks...

I would check and see what your trunk is made of. Years ago I had a Crown Vic and a Taurus that had a non magnetic alloy trunk lid. I had to run ground straps to the rear deck lid and it still was not great. Could be your issue.
