Not sure if I'm explaining this correctly, but when I turn the clarifier knob on my 979 galaxy its kinda wonky , almost as if the potentiometer stalk is bent. I received mine today brand new and sealed. Anything to be concerned about ?

Some will have slop in them or what you call loose, and some will be tight. Might be a QC issue. And as far as the clarifier not being centered. That is normal for most radios that have not had a really good alignment done to the radio. Out of the box they are just set to an approx. setting per the diagram that the builder uses. They don't sit and align every radio on the line to be perfect I guess is what I am saying. And Galaxy radios do tend to drift. So as the radio gets warmer it will change frequency. Same goes if it's really cold. You have to let them normally warm up before using them if it's really cold. They are a hard radio to get to be very stable on SSB especially as the way they are built. Lots of changes can be made and they can be made to be pretty much drift free, but it won't happen out of the box that is for sure. Hope this helps and have a good day.

Thanks, with the alignment I was referring to the physical pot itself, when I turn it with radio off the knob doesn't look straight. Imagine someone bending the pot then what it would look like if you turned it. Wonky right.

Not an issue since it works ok i think. However since i dont have another galaxy on hand can't compare thr tightness levels of the potentiometer.

Yeah I get that now. The shaft is bent I believe is what you are saying. It's possible. Box may have been dropped during shipping, or in the store. Hard to tell. It can be replaced, but if it's not broke then I'd just use it.

Either got damaged while in shipping or just bad QA/QC. They MIGHT check 1 out of every 100 radios on the line. If the shaft is just bent, I'd run it. The talkback shaft on my 959 is bent pretty good but still works. Point is, Galaxy pots are pretty tough and even taking a traumatic hit still work.

True, since the pot worked fine. But felt more slack than others

Sometimes they do. If it concerns you that much or causes performance issues, I'd return it under warranty. Better now than later when you really need it and it fails. Even new cars have wonky issues warranty needs to cover putting them out of service, Lol. I know I hate being without my radios especially when weather gets bad and I don't have my WX radio.

check out this image and see how the knurled part of the shaft does not go all the way to the base like we are used to seeing.
this is why the knob doesn't want to sit on the shaft straight.

you might be able to put some tape on the shaft behind the knurled section in order to make it a bit larger of a diameter thereby causing the knob to sit centered.

as for the "action" of that pot, well, it's just a cheap pot.

It's a $130- $140 radio and not a work of art. If the pot is functioning properly, why worry?
