Cobra 142GTL speaker feedback (bleed) on modulation

Need more info, if this is a new radio to you, maybe it has TalkBack mod installed. If it has worked fine until now, then started talking back, that's necessary info too. Have you tried another mic? If you want help, start from the beginning and tell everything, no matter how insignificant.

Do you have another mike to try? The switch in the mike shuts down the speaker while transmitting.

A quick test is to unplug the mike and see if you hear any receiver audio. If you do, this problem lies in the radio and not the mike.

Well I plugged an external speaker in to see if it did it through the external and it didn't, and when I unplugged the external speaker the problem was no longer there

If the nut holding the external jack is loose and touches the metal surface of the chassis you'll get a symptom like this. That jack is mounted in a "shoulder" washer that insulates the jack's threaded bushing from the rim of the mounting hole. Another simple flat insulating fiber washer under the round nut insulates it from the chassis metal.

If that nut gets loose, the metal threaded bushing could touch the inside rim of the hole. A short from the jack's bushing to the chassis can do this.
