Cobra 148F ?

Received this today.. my question is this, if you look at the knob (voice lock).. you'll see the red dot all the way at 7:00 .. that's where I have to go to be on frequency.. now look at the frequency counter , it's showing I'm on 27.385 ..took knob off and it's lined up right .. so knob is lined up right.. shouldn't be at 12:00 (center).. at least all my other radios are center slot.. any help would be appreciated.. I have another radio right next to this one 148F .. put the headset plugged into my 2950 , and to my surprise it was pretty close to being on frequency. I was told by seller that the clarifier wasn't unlocked.. so that's what puzzled me.. well it's pretty close being right on.. so I won't question it.. Thanks for your reply sir.. regards Rick

Does the counter change when you turn the clarifier in transmit mode?

If the clarifier causes the display to change when you twist it while transmitting, it has already been "cut loose", locking the transmit frequency to the receiver frequency.

And if turning it has no effect at all while transmitting, it's still stock.

If so, it would be worth knowing what frequency it shows in transmit mode.

There are three tiny ferrite-slug adjustments in the radio. One each for AM, LSB and USB. Each one sets the clarifier's center frequency for that mode only.

Takes a tiny non-metallic screwdriver tip tool. Width is 1.4 mm, pretty sure.

Sure sounds as if L22, L23 and L59 were adjusted wrong. Just can't remember which coil is active for which mode.

Yes when I turn the clarifier the frequency will go up to 27.387 and that's going from 7:00-5:00 only 2 khz.. not normal.. funny thing is at the 7:00 position it's pretty much on frequency.. I will have my buddy look at it tomorrow.. who knows what was done to it.. other than that good working radio.. I'll take that information to you sent me and share it with my buddy and go from there.. Thanks Rick

"Frequency not changing on key up."

This means one of two things.

1) The frequency changes when you turn the clarifier knob WHILE TRANSMITTING.

or

2) The clarifier changes the frequency only while receiving, but not while transmitting.


That's what I'm trying to unravel, what that knob does while the mike is keyed.
