Got the 2000 late yesterday an got an initial setup going I have to move quite a bit of stuff around because it's a lot bigger than my other radio .This is what I notice when you turn up the Dynamic mic past 2:00 pm it get a hissing sound in the receive .I doesn't need to go that high because modulation is outstanding it came with a Turner SSK. That's another issue the contacts on that need cleaning anyone ever do it in one ? I hooked up my Silver Eagle for the time being it looks nice with the radio but everyone says the Turner sounds better on SSB . Just got it so I'm sure I'll have other posts . Thanks in advance

Not that I know of I hear it on receive when I crank it up , turn it down goes away . Talk to a few people UK , Scandinavia , Texas said I sound local . What's up with the speakers? It came with two an they sound like crap in plain English . This radio talks just Don't like the way it sounds now I have to figure out how to clean the relays on the mic .

You said Dynamic, I guess you meant Rec. Deoxit is what I use to clean switches and relays. Might need to recap the receive section, mine has the hiss also. I don't have stock speakers, I use bookshelf speakers right now.

Has been recapped an I meant the mic gain ref gain seems fine , modulation not a problem well over 100℅ I have to be careful not to break the meter so I have it cut back . Have not checked variable power yet its set @ 3 watts but it has a long way to go . I think I'll go check the output now I'm curios . lol

Stock speakers have a poor frequency response. Once you do the RX hi-fi mod and use a quality speaker it will sound great.

Common problem with the 2000's about the noise when you turn up the volume. On the one I am using now, if I turn up past 12 I get a squeal. Its a microphone thing. If you put on a stock microphone, no squeal. I'm not going deaf so no need to turn past 12 and therefore no problem.

It's a 30 year old radio, they need to be re-cap'd at this age.

I've got a bunch of d104's and they all have dirty switches in the stalk. I tried spraying cleaner willy nilly into the stalk but the results are fruitless. It needs to be taken apart to get to that multi-tap switch and clean. Screws taken out, wires removed ... its turning out to be a labour intensive task. I'm doing a video on this task and will post sometime on YouTube when its done. There's a guy on eBay that will refurb the D104's for $80 + shipping.

Thanks Hobie I had the d104 on my 140 gtl . Thanks guys the problem is somewhere in the SSK I hooked up the d104 an the problem went away I could turn it wide open I reconnected the SSK an it returned sooooo... I started a new thread on the mic forum about cleaning relays be careful I move around ! " It's hard to hit a moving Target " ,!!!

A proper working Cobra 2000 should swing 12-15 watts on AM and maybe 16-18 watts PEP on SSB. It's an old radio, it's gonna need a general going through by a good old school tech. It will never be a heavy swinger nor should it be.

If you want HiFi audio buy a ham rig. Let your Cobra 2000 be what it was supposed to be, a nice smooth sounding stable SSB cb set. All you need is a proper tune/alignment, check the power supply side, add xtra channels, unlock the clarifier, get a decent desk mic, and enjoy.

Thank you 9c1 it swings@ 15 on am It his variable power extra channels an clarifier has been unlocked diode a upgraded its dead on frequency my problem revolved around a bad mic that came with it changed it to my Silver Eagle n audio cleared up .

Most of my issues have been worked out . The radio really talks an receives excellent ! I talked barefoot to the UK with it first time in years making a contact with out power . The last time I did it was with a old Moon Raker 7 anyone that remembers that antenna knows the size an his well they work when well maintained .The only unresolved problems I have is the ref meter is not working right an after research I found out it's common with these radios an the speaker selector switch not working right , both speakers work but you can't select them maybe I'll try the magic spray ! The guy offered me a $20 refund for the meter . Not!!! The cheapest found one is $29.99 an I can't install it do to medical problems so it will cost me more $ anybody got an idea what it will cost to put in a new meter ?

Check to see if the speaker switch has been used for a mod. I think the PA/CB switch is the 10kc on my radio and the tone is variable power.
