I hate dropping the ball on these things but guess I was led astray by my desire to get the best price I can!!!
I'm going to look at these vids and see if I can figure out what is what by the numbers on the board .
I've never done this before and on top of everything else the "pots" on this radio really look SMALL and fragile!!!

Ok, I'll ask this straight up,(I guess it is no secret?)
Can some one give me the number on the board on the 980, for the AM Bias, that I need to turn down to 1.5.
And the number for the modulation pot that I need to turn up?
I think that is minimal that I need to do so the radio will take the amp?

If it were my radio I would set it to 2 watts carrier/8 watts peak AM and 12 watts SSB PEP, but that is just me.
Be sure to take high quality pics of all of the pots, that way you know where you started if you goof. I once marked the pots I was going to adjust, but I turned the wrong one and had no way of returning it to stock. Just be careful.
rt206 is the AM dead key to lower it. you are saying bias for some reason. that is the VR for adjusting the match of the final to output. so leave the bias alone or you will blow a final real fast.one of the guy's posted this a couple years ago. maybe this will help

If all I have to do is the RT 206 dead key and get out I should be ok!!!
I guess to find out what you did I have my Power/SWR meter hooked to a dummy load and key the mic?
That will give me a reading on the meter?

Yes. But before you just go and turn the pot down for AM, watch a video or 2 to get an understanding of what you are doing. Just some food for thought. Also make sure to turn the mic gain on the radio all the way down before making any adjustments. Like I said best to probably watch a few videos of it being done as to get a good understanding. JMHO's.
And DON'T mess with those coils - either.

Also make sure you use a non conductive screwdriver like the one pictured in the video above.
Also keep in mind that you can most likely have Bells do that work for you no problem. Not sure how far out of the way he is from your route.
And last, leave the amp out of line until after you have completed the work on the radio.
Be safe and take your time. No need to rush. Might want to just hold off on adjusting things for now and get a good mic for the radio. The ones I would recommend are, the RF Limited 2018 extreme, uniden BC906W wireless mic, and last but not least, the older uniden mic model #BMKG0637001, pictured below. It's a good mic as well from my own use of one and experience. Have a good one and be safe. Good day.

those little VR's damage very easy and are next to impossible to find.as others have said be very careful making the adjustments. if it was mine I would do the cap resister mod simuler to the cap resister mod done to a cobra 29 radio. you still have the swing but a lower dead key. but that is a total different thing to do and do not recommend it being done by some one that has never done the mod. you could make the radio junk if you do not know how to do it. it is not like the cobra 29 mod as far as just taking out a wire jumper. I will never post this mod because a novice can ruin a radio doing this mod to a radio like this. my buddy owns a shop and refuses to do it since it requires a lot of work.you have to either lift a leg of a part or cut a trace to add the part.
Personally, I wouldn't do a thing to this radio - other than lowering the dead key to accommodate a 2 pill amp. Since most 2 pill amps require no more than 10 watts peak input; that should work with a 1 or 2 watt deadkey setting. That is - if I was going to run an amp with it. Which I wouldn't do.
