When you say it receives?
Does that mean the needle moves? or can you hear the bench radio thru your speaker? Or can you hear people talking thru your speaker?
Sometimes your radio/needle will just pick up rf from the bench radio.
You'll need at least a DVM about $20 to get started.

My cobra 25 litd classic made in the year 2000 has good strong receive that kinda sorta sounds on the edge of distortion or crunchy.
Do these 25,s share the same receiver circuit as the cobra 29 ?

Welcome! I believe that the 25 is essentially the same as a 29. A radio that old is probably ready to have it's capacitors replaced. I have a radio that needs caps so bad that it will make some funny noises as it warms up.
