Isn't that normal?

Best bet would be have the radio bench tested, and have them check the receive. All those filter caps do is reduce noise that rides in on the power line. Some vehicles are just noisey, some areas of town same thing. Heck, if the guy was way out in the sticks then what you have going on is normal. A filter cap will not boost your receive, it filters out electrical noise....to a point.

yup the caps were used to filter out the noise. but it just seems like there is such a big diference now between distant stations and close. also now if i am just sitting idle and i use the nb/anl it almost seems to kill it to were i have to turn up the volume all the way up to hear anything.

Was it always that way, or only since the mod?
after the mod. he did a Tram D201A the same way and it seems to be doing the same thing. the hash and trash is gone but with distant stations that nomaly i can keep the volume on other radios the same just don't come in until i turn the volume all the way up. for instance if a guy that is 20 miles away i have to turn the volume max out to hear him and it's still weak, but if a guy say 8 miles aways transmits the volume blows me out the room its seems to be more of a volume problem i guese than a sensitivity problem. DTB what do you think i know your great with cobras.

Thats what it kind of sounds like to me is just detuning the rteceive in some way.
there was a little white & blue looking dial insidehe turned back saying it was wide open and thats why i got so much hash and white noise could that have been the wrong thing that he turned back so far and detuned it. he was using a signal generator while doing his so called mod. it all staarted when i told him everthing on the receive was running togeather it was hard to pick out the receive like the selectivity was bad

It will need to be re-alinged now.

I agree on it needs a proper alignment. The problem with that
is nine out of ten tech's / solder jocks don't have what it takes
nor the proper equipment to even begin. They just do the ear tune. Then get some Sasquatch to yell at them from a distance and compare to what the needle is showing on the shops radio.
I have had several customers tell me that was how the radio brought to me was tuned.

I had the same problem with the recieve being very quite and had to turn volume up on distant stations. And turn back down on close up stations. My problem was the antenna not being tuned correctly.
