Cobra 29 XLR

What is a 29 XLR? seen a picture of one and it's got a small switch labeled "HF"?

It had a two position switch that had OFF / HF, and had other two and three position switches that I have seen before like PA / CB, NB / ANL etc.....

If I remember correctly, HF was just a tone control type of thing.

HF = "High Filter"

It reduces the "high frequencies" from the speaker. It is a tone control.

I bought one for $15

Cobra sold the first radio with the model number "29" around 1973 or '74. That one was a 23-channel radio.

The 29XLR was the 1978 model.

Pretty sure it was made for just that one year.

And there have been literally dozens of "29" radios of all flavors sold since then.

Not much. Okay radios, I've had a few, but really nothing special. If you wanted one, $15 was an alright buy.

A friend was going to send me one from trucks cb... for $40

At that price, we can safely assume that it has not had the 40-year tuneup. That would typically call for replacing a couple dozen or more electrolytic capacitors. They become unreliable after that long. This causes "out of the blue" breakdowns.

Or, maybe it's a "barn find" with only 500 original miles on it. That radio might hold up just fine for a few months or maybe a year.

Too bad it doesn't come with an odometer.
